Dr. Marvel A. Turner Sr., CPA, named interim vice president and Chief Financial Officer
Dr. Marvel A. Turner Sr., CPA, is interim vice president and chief financial officer of Jackson State University. Turner earned his doctorate in Public Policy, Administration and Finance, as well as his bachelor’s in accounting from JSU. He holds a master’s in accounting from the University of Southern Mississippi. In 1980, he became a certified public accountant. He’s also owner of Turner and Associates, Small Business Consulting, Audit, Accounting, Income Tax and Management Advisory Services.
Previous roles at JSU have included assistant professor of accounting (2005-2013) and vice president for fiscal affairs (1984-1989). From 1989 to 1993, he was director of JSU’s Small Business Development Center.

Dowell Taylor named leader of JSU’s band program
As a former leader of several bands, he has received numerous highlights and honors. Jet Magazine, the Christian Science Monitor and People Magazine have recognized his bands.
“In 1972, under the leadership of Harold Haughton Sr., I joined the Sonic Boom family as a freshman member of the tuba section,” Taylor said. “Since that time my love for the organization has never floundered, as I have always remained loyal and poised to assist in whatever way possible, whenever I could.”
His previous stints as JSU’s director of bands were 1984-1992 and 2012-2016.

Air Force ROTC installs 1st female commander
Lt. Col. Shander Adams becomes the first woman appointed commander of JSU’s Air Force ROTC.
She vows to continue developing a diverse culture of excellence. “We will create successful leaders with a solid foundation and with a focus on service before self and excellence in all we do.”
She replaces retiring Lt. Col. Timothy Henderson. A special guest at the ceremony included Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson.

Undergraduate academic advisement chief joins national panel
F. Janelle Hannah Jefferson has joined the leadership team of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), which works to enhance the educational development of students.
Jefferson is coordinator of advisement and chief academic adviser for JSU’s Undergraduate Studies. She’s also the lead instructor of University Success First-Year Experience.
She describes her new national role as the HBCU Interest Group Commission Chair as a positive reflection for JSU because NACADA sets the standard for academic advising in higher education.

JSU author-dean explores health in Mississippi, Africa
Dr. Mario J. Azevedo, dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Jackson State University, is an established author with two additional releases – one on health disparities in Mississippi and a more recent publication about failed strategies to curb preventable diseases in Africa.
Azevedo once served as interim dean of the College of Public Service, associate dean of the School of Health Sciences and chair of the Department of Epidemiology.
He exposed Mississippi’s unequal distribution of its scarce resources in a 2016 book, the “State of Health and Health Care in Mississippi.” His recently released 12th book, “Historical Perspectives on Health and Health Systems in Africa,” explores how the continent has overcome centuries of major hurdles, ranging from the rigors of tropical climate to the devastation of slavery.
