The Cinderella season for the Jackson State University Athletics Department continues as the Lady Tigers bring in yet another SWAC Conference Championship.

The women’s volleyball team has had an historical season despite all the challenges they have endured as a team. Last August, it was unsure if any sports were going to take place due to Covid-19 restrictions. So when it was announced that SWAC sports would resume in the spring, the rest was history.

The Lady Tigers entered the SWAC tournament with a perfect record of 8-0 and the #1 seed. Although they had simply dismantled all competition throughout the season, they knew they had a lot to prove in the tournament.

The Lady Tigers earned the 2021 SWAC Championship on March 28 due to Covid-19 related issues from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff with student quarantining

The Lady Tigers were pronounced the SWAC Champions after finishing the season as the regular season SWAC Champions and an undefeated season at 11-0.

Jackson State won the first round of the SWAC Tournament over Mississippi Valley State 3-0, before winning the semifinals 3-1 against Southern.

This SWAC Championship was the fourth under legendary JSU Coach, Rose Washington. The team previously won in 2011, 2012, and 2016. The Lady Tigers will now play in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament which will be hosted in Omaha, Neb. from April 14-24.

Taronta Gines, a senior accounting major from Moss Point, Miss., believes this spring season is the beginning of something special for Jackson State sports. He has no doubt that JSU can potentially be a collegiate powerhouse going forward.

“I don’t think anyone outside of the JSU community knows how rough it was to be a JSU fan. We’re always losing and getting baptized by other schools in all sports to be honest. It feels good to be on the other side,” said Gines. “Like when people think about JSU, they really think about a school that’s winning and has a lot going for them. I’m just so happy for the volleyball team and them winning the SWAC and going undefeated. I will always remember this moment”.

Kemiya Lewis, a junior education major from Chicago, Ill., is so excited for what JSU has done so far this season.

“The spring season has been historical in so many ways. As a JSU student, being resilient is an understatement And the volleyball team has proven that. From not knowing if they were even going to have a season, to winning it all is simply amazing. I’m so proud of them and glad I was here to witness history,” said Lewis.
