Jackson State University women’s soccer team overcame Mississippi College3-2 on Sept. 12, , despite the multiple storm delays at the JSU Soccer Complex.
The Lady Tigers opened up the game with a bang. Within two minutes, Elexis Rice, a sophomore forward, scored an unbelievable goal with the help of her teammate Jalana Ellis. But, not even a full minute goes by and the Ellis scores again with the assistance of Shatiuanna Banks. They wasted no time at all. The amazing goal earned Rice College Sports Madness SWAC Soccer Player of the week.
At this point the Lady Tigers were up 2-0. As the game continued, at the 15 minute mark, the Lady Choctaws returned the favor by scoring a point.
“After the first goal, I felt like we needed to pick it up as a team and raise our level to compensate for their goal,” said forward Eroncia Berry, a junior business administration major from Greensboro, N. C. “My mindset after that was to just focus on what we needed to do to get another goal.”
Rice scored again after the second half began. The Lady Tigers worked hard on defending their goal, but they could not stop their opponent from making another goal.
“I think we have a good foundation set and we make good progression everyday. I see us winning SWAC again,” said forward Shatiuanna Banks, a junior majoring in accounting from Las Vegas, Nev.
