I had the pleasure of reviewing the local, legendary Eddie’s Snack Bar this week, also known as Eddie and Ruby’s.
Eddie’s is a hometown favorite and is said to be the one of, if not the best fish place in town. It is certainly one of my favorites as I have been enjoying their food since I was a little girl.
If you cannot already tell, yes I recommend this place. It is affordable and is located right around the corner from THEE Jackson State University at 1268 Valley Street. It is best known for its pantrout and catfish. On this visit, I chose the pantrout order and received six pieces of fish, fries and salad for a little over $8, a really low price.
The menu at Eddie’s is very simple. It is what is to be expected from a small restaurant without much variety. Fries seem to come with every meal and fish is basically the whole menu with little variation. Most of the menu items are all under $9, great for college student budgets and they do accept the SuperCard.
There are three things to make note of if you plan to visit Eddie’s. 1: You will more than likely have a long wait. 2. The building is ridiculously small and sometimes extremely crowded. 3. The customer service can be a little tricky. Depending on the day, the person at the window has been known to be a little snippy.
If you plan to go during your lunch time, you better call in an order, because as evidenced by the lines, everyone knows where to come to get the best fried fish in Jackson.
As a result of the size of the restaurant, standing should be expected. The restaurant is not really made for customers to sit and eat and most take their greasy brown bags of fish to go.
Also, do not let the outside appearance of the little restaurant dissuade you from trying it out. It is old, but very clean on the inside.
If you are craving that good, hot fried fish like your grandmother used to make on Saturdays, Eddie’s is the place to go. The food surely will not let you down.
