Two of his students said they are not surprised that Dr. Everette G. Neasman, assistant professor in the Department of English and Modern Foreign Languages at Jackson State University, has been selected as Humanities Teacher and Scholar for 2011.

Tesia Nagorka, a senior English major from Biloxi, Miss., said: “I’m not surprised at all because he is a teacher of excellence.”

Treasure Thigpen, a senior English major from Cincinnati, OH, calls Neasman a “black Shakespearean” because of his extensive knowledge of author and playwright William Shakespeare.

“He’s the best teacher I’ve ever had; the most enthusiastic and motivating instructor,” stated Thigpen. “You can trust what he teaches you; he is really passionate about his subject matter.

Neasman has presented numerous scholarly papers and lectures on the dramatic works of Shakespeare and is the 2010 recipient of the Robert Adger Law Award of Best Shakespeare paper at the Conference of College Teachers of English.   He is founder and the current advisor for the JSU Shakespeare Club, a student organization that celebrates Shakespeare’s dramatic and poetic art. Neasman also lectures and presents puppet shows on Shakespeare in the Jackson Public Schools.

As the recipient Humanities Teacher Award, Neasman will received $400 and is required to make a public program presentation, and he will do so on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 10 a.m. in the Dollye Robinson College of Liberal Arts Lecture Room 266. The presentation, entitled“Contemplative Soliloquy: Teaching Hamlet in the 21st Century University Classroom,” will be followed by a reception.
