If action and adventure are your vice, you should definitely consider seeing “The Magnificent Seven,” which debuted in theaters on Sept. 23.
The incomparable Denzel Washington stars as Sam Chisolm, the leader of seven gunmen who come to the aid of poor town that is being terrorized by thieves.
Remaking a 56- year old movie is an idea many moviegoers might think would fail, but not when director Antoine Fuqua is involved. Fuqua is best known for directing “Training Day”, which also starred Washington, and has also directed music videos for the likes of Prince, Usher, Stevie Wonder and more.
Grossing over $35 million over the weekend, “The Magnificent Seven” has more than just Washington drawing in the crowds. Many will recognize Vincent D’onofrio, Ethan Hawke, Chris Pratt and others do a wonderful job of reprising the roles of the “Seven”.
The movie starts and ends with action and excitement. In the movies, desperate and God-fearing townspeople set out to get assistance from bounty hunter, Chisolm, when greedy gold miners demand they relinquish their homes and land.
As the movie explores the ups and downs of the seven misfits who come together to help the townspeople, action and adventure can be found in every scene.
What makes the movie so great is that you find yourself rooting for characters that would normally be villains in other movie. There is a gambler, outlaw, sharp shooter, warrior, tracker, and even an assassin that bring action to this film.
Unlike the original, there is a rainbow of ethnicity in the Wild West. Native American, black, Korean and Mexican actors prove that the West wasn’t all white.
Some viewers felt that without the violence, there is nothing else going on but luckily, there is plenty of violence to solve that problem.
The cast was wonderfully selected and kept you on the edge of your seat throughout the movie. The wit and charm made the characters lovable and unforgettable.
The diversity of each character brought them to life. They each had memorable personalities and the writers were able to relay a bit of their past into the scenes which gave them depth.
Although this movie may not have been magnificent to some, it was definitely action packed and entertaining.
