The Lady Tigers took on Prairie View A&M University on Jan. 14 and Texas Southern University on Monday, Jan. 16. winning both games. The Lady Tigers now have a record of 4-2 in the SWAC and 7-8 overall.
There were many ties during the first half of the Prairie View game, but the Lady Tigers managed to take the lead with a layup from Rachel Jones with 38 seconds left in the half making the score 24-22. They shot 40.7 percent from the field, made one three-point play out of four tries making their percentage 25.
The team was also 50 percent from the free throws.
During the second half, Prairie View put up a fight but the Lady Tigers held on to the lead. It was down to the last 4.27 minutes of the game and the Lady Tigers were only up by five points. When the game was down to the last 1.17 Jeanette Jackson from Prairie View stole the ball and LaReahn Washington scored tying the game at 45-45 and taking the lead with a foul shot after being filed on her scoring attempt making the score 45-46 in favor of PVAMU.
The Lady Tigers responded with a free throw shot from Jasmine Greer, which tied the game at 46-46 with 49 seconds remaining. Greer then made the final layup with an assist from Kiana McCarthy, which won the game.
After winning against PVAMU the Lady Tigers faced off against Texas Southern. JSU kept the lead with no less than 4 points and shot 34.6 percent from the field. They were 37.5 percent from three-point range and shot 75 percent from the free throw line.
The game ended with a final score of 55-38 and victory for JSU. The Lady Tigers are second in the SWAC and take on Grambling State at Jackson State’s Lee E. Williams Athletic Assembly Center on Saturday Jan. 21 at 5 p.m.
