Starting this Sunday, the new student theater will begin showing the recently released movie Thor that hit theatres earlier this year on May 6.
In a summer littered with excellent action movies such as Transformers: The Dark of the Moon, Captain America: The First Avenger, and X-Men: First Class, one can be forgiven for looking over the theatrical release of Thor in May of this year. In July, Thor was released on DVD and Blu-ray on both high definition and 3D HD formats. In fact, many of you may have this movie in your collection as you are reading this article.
Thor, The Incredible Hulk, and both Iron Man and its sequel serves as a setup for the team-oriented action movie The Avengers. And with all of its godlessness, allusions to Norse mythology and dabbling into the Marvel Comics Universe, Thor proved to be not only an excellent addition to the series, but also just the movie to usher in the summer of action – even if it was released a month beforehand.
Thor, the titular character played by Matthew Vaughn, as an Asgardian with a hothead. His father, the all-powerful Odin (Anthony Hopkins), who is ruler of the kingdom of Asgard, punishes his son for an act that could have sent his kingdom to war by stripping him of all his powers, banishes him to Earth, and enchants his hammer Mjolnir so that only one that’s worthy can hold it. While on Earth, Thor meets Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), his main love interest. Meanwhile, his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), finds out a deep, dark secret, causing him to set forth a plan that only Thor and his companions can put a stop to.
IMDb users gave it an average of 7.2 out of 10. Boxofficemojo.com reported Thor’s opening weekend sales were over $65 million, and it held the number one movie spot for two weeks.
As with any comic book film, particularly from Marvel Entertainment, this is a movie that has more
than it’s fair share of special effects. Thunderbolts, epic tornadoes, characters flying in the air –either willingly or by force – you name it, it’s covered. Where this movie shines is that it has not only a star-studded cast, but an engaging storyline that subtly draws you into Thor’s adventure. At heart, however, it is all about the action, and this is a film that will be wonderful addition to anyones video library.
