The Lady Tigers Volleyball team is undefeated and currently ranked number one in the the SWAC East. They have a record of 21-9 overall.
According to JSU Athletic Media Relations, the team won their 17th consecutive game, and has officially set a new school record of most consecutive wins in a single season with its victory over Grambling State University on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011. They will also have to opportunity to enter the 2011 SWAC Volleyball Tournament.
Head Coach Rose Washington said the team needs to keep working on fundamentals and cutting down on the errors in previous games so they could improve and correct them before the next game. She said that this method has been working for them and helping the team to look better than the game before.
“They (players) love what they are doing, it’s not stressful on them. People usually say the team takes after their coach and I’m not a stressful person. I just understand that if you are committed and have passion and you work hard at what you say you love, you will be successful,” said Washington. “They are enjoying it and I think we want to go the rest of the way so they’re really focusing in on that and obviously it’s ultimately about a championship, and they know that we want to go and win it.”
Chyna Coleman, an outside hitter and senior from Phoenix, Ariz. majoring in therapeutic recreation said it feels great to be unbeaten and to be on top of the conference and that’s why they’ve worked hard since pre- season. Coleman also does not feel the team is pressured.
“All we have to do is continue executing and becoming more versatile on the court,” said Coleman.
Latoya Clark, a senior social work major from Tallahassee, Fla. said, “I don’t feel like there is any pressure, as long as we play our game and know our level we will be great.”
Clark feels that if the team improves communication, talking more and being energetic the whole game they will be successful.
