Farewell Jackson State University,
I transferred to JSU in the fall of 2009. I thought I knew everything I needed to know about college so I was “well prepared” or so I thought. I had much more freedom to become my own person and make decisions based on what I wanted to do. I grew up at Jackson State. I learned to chart my own course and navigate the waters of my curriculum and social life.
I came in as a non-traditional student and I had no idea what H.B.C.U. meant let alone how it would impact my life. I excelled academically and blossomed socially. After all it is kind of hard not to want to participate in the hot spots or cheer the great Sonic Boom on as they march down the historic Gibbs-Green Plaza. I never knew such camaraderie could exist among an entire body of students.
The Tiger fight has been instilled in me and now that I am a graduation senior I have only begun to tip the iceberg. I will be attending JSU this summer for graduate school in mass communications. My ultimate goal is to impact the lives of young students by teaching and making a difference in schools today. Jackson State is my dear old home and I could not think of a better place to continue my education. The connections I have made here are invaluable. The professors set me on a course to succeed and my home away from home, The Blue & White Flash and its staff, welcomed me with open arms. For that I will forever be grateful to Sylvia Watley, Shannon Tatum and Ernest Camel. These three in addition to the staff members encouraged me and helped me to reach my full potential as a writer.
For me this is not really farewell. This is more of a “see you later” Jackson State because I will be back in June 2012. JSU will always hold a special place in my heart because it is where I learned to succeed and exceed expectations I put on myself. I learned to dream big and with hard work, perseverance and support I can achieve anything I put my mind to.
