Jackson State University Men’s and Women’s Tennis Team hosted Nickelodeon’s 10th Annual Worldwide Day of Play on Sept. 7, 2013.
Worldwide Day of Play is a health and wellness initiative to help address the growing health problems that exist in today’s youth.
To help fight obesity, promote wellness, and get the youth engaged in the sport of tennis, the JSU tennis team gave free lessons to youth in the Jackson community.
Scott Pennington, Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach, said “I was glad we were able to reach out to the community to get the children and adults out and introduce our players and the sport of tennis. It was a nice day. I look forward to doing more free play in the future for our players and the community.”
According to Kurt Kamperman, USTA Chief Executive of Community Tennis, USTA free tennis play events are a great opportunity to get kids active and to encourage them to lead a healthy lifestyle during National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.
“In addition, these events provide a fantastic platform to showcase the fun and excitement of youth tennis, and will encourage families to get involved in the sport,” said Kamperman.
