Spring is here which means it is time to revamp your wardrobe. When it comes to fashion for college students affordability is the key. Spring 2014 has many fresh and edgy styles that will make you look at your best.
The 10 colors of this season according to Pantone and top designers are dazzling blue, violet tulip, radiant orchid, celosia orange, freesia, cayenne, placid blue, paloma, sand, and hemlock. The color way is definitely among the pastels and neon colors.
When you think of spring, the first thing that comes to mind is flowers. The floral pattern is expected to dominate this season. The bright and bold floral patterns can be worn by both men and women whether it is worn on shirts, pants, or skirts. However, beware of this trend because wearing too many floral patterns will make you look like your grandmother’s sofa. Never pair a floral shirt with floral bottoms. With the floral trend, a little goes a long way. Focus on one piece that will make a statement.
Joyce Winston, a junior Biology Chemistry Pre-Dental major from Detroit, Mich., spends time helping people perfect their style. Winston said being a stylist she often tells people to not follow fashion but lead it.
She added what she predicts in the fashion forecast this season.
“I am expecting a bit of fur this spring, floral patterns, and acid wash denim. Single sole ankle strap heels and pencil skirts are my favorites that are always in. I have gotten accustomed to midi dresses. I wear what I feel, meaning my clothes match my mood. I want to always make a statement but remain elegant and classy. Following the fashion rules are just as hard as breaking them. It’s a learning process but then again, you make the process,” said Winston.
For women, the trends are very risqué but feminine. Two piece outfits will be very popular. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Ciara, and even Beyonce have been spotted rocking two piece ensembles. A two piece outfit could consist of: high-waisted skirt with mid-drift top, long trouser pants with mid-drift top, matching crop top and penciled skirt. This trend can be pulled off tastefully if the clothing is not tight and hem lines to skirts are longer. Midi dresses (or medium length) and skirts are very popular this spring, so don’t think that having a longer hem line will hurt you, it will help you master the look.
Another popular trend among women this season is mesh and sheers. Mesh and sheers can add edge to an outfit without being too revealing. The fabrics can are very light to wear and add a touch of naturalness to your look. Every female college student should have a pretty dress with sheer this spring.
A trend that is creeping its way out of winter to into spring is graphics. Graphics will be everywhere on clothing for men and women. Whether it’s on t-shirts, crewnecks, sneakers, dresses, etc. Graphics can be anything from animal faces, famous people, pyramids, etc. Just don’t go overboard with this trend, especially for men. Make sure that 90% of your wardrobe doesn’t consist of graphic t-shirts and crewnecks. Have a balance of urban and dapper so that you won’t appear to be a hipster.
When it comes to accessories, keep it simple and sweet. The most popular shoe for women this spring will be the ‘peek-a-boo’ toe booties, wedges, lace-up boots and heels. Make sure that you have a fresh toe nail color to compliment the trend. Try to choose nail polishes that go along with the color scheme of the season; stick to neon’s and pastels. Accessories will be chunky flower head bands, clear clutch hand bags, and statement necklaces.
Men’s accessories will include the vintage windbreaker. This style is reemerging from the 1980s and is a must have for any male this spring. If you are lucky you can find this trend at a local thrift store and the bolder the color; the better. Bucket hats are also on the fashion forecast. Shoes for men are bright bold sneakers like New Balances and moccasin loafer style shoes.
Quentin Hendree, a junior marketing major from Memphis Tenn., said, “Fellas there is nothing wrong with putting your Jordans to the side to throw on a pair of loafers or Oxfords. This is the time we elevate our wardrobe. Don’t be so secluded to wearing sneakers. I think when adding shoes like the Nike Rosheruns to your closet, the sauce game will come to higher levels.”
Don’t be limited to just shopping in the mall to find these trends. Try other mediums such as thrift shopping and online shopping if you are on a budget. Remember these trends to help you pick out your wardrobe to make sure you spring into this season fashion forward.
