We all know that summer is right around the corner and so many of us are eager to go back home to kick back and relax. That does seem like a great way to let go of the stresses of having to go to classes, but it is never a great thing to allow yourself to release your mind of everything you have learn throughout your semesters in school. How will you stay productive?

No internship? Find a job. For those of you who have not been fortunate enough to have an internship for the summer, go out and look for a job that is close to the career that you are pursuing. If there is not a job available that is synonymous to your career choice, find a job that will help you gain experience. Also look for an organization to join that is in connection to your major.

Volunteer for community service. With your spare time, find an organization that sparks your interest and volunteer at least one to two times per week. Not only will you volunteer somewhere that you are intrigued by, but you will earn the opportunity to let the advisors get to know you. Once the advisors know you, they will have a great idea of who you are as a person and worker. With that, you should not have a difficult time acquiring a scintillating letter or recommendation.

Learn to live a healthy lifestyle. Many of us face the challenges of becoming healthy and sometimes we do not know where to start and it can be hard to stay persistent. If you are not fortunate enough to have a gym membership, use social media to guide you toward starting a health journey. Instagram and YouTube gurus that are very knowledgeable when it comes to being healthy. Use the advice of many Instagramers and YouTubers to get your foot in the door to becoming a healthier you.

Keep your brain active. Yes, we will be out of school for summer but that does not mean that you should let go of the things that you have learned in those classes that seemed to last for ages. Instead of kicking your feet up and indulging in a day filled with cartoons and reality shows, work your brain. Read a book that is interesting to you. Grab some friends and go to the museum and learn about the extinct inhabitants of this universe. Find games to play that require you to take time out to think such as “Better Brain Age Test” which can be downloaded in your app store.

Prepare for your future. If you are a student pursuing a career in medicine, start preparing over the summer by taking practice MCAT exams or by taking summer MCAT Prep course. It does not matter what your major is because it is never too early to prepare for your exams such as the GRE, LSAT, or PRAXIS I & II. It can get you closer to your dreams.

To be productive over the summer I will learn what it means to live a healthy lifestyle. Although I do workout consistently, I do not have guidance from someone who is actually a fitness expert. I will find someone to teach me the fundamentals of becoming physically healthy while I work on the other half of delving into a healthy mind. A healthy mind for me is exactly who I am. It is learning to appreciate myself as I am but not forgetting to understand the things that need to be altered for myself and no one else. I will be productive this summer in constructing myself.
