Jackson State University celebrated Earth Day on April 22 in the Heritage Dining Hall sponsored by Sodexo. The event took place in efforts to extend the celebration of planet Earth and to get students to become eco-friendly.
Sodexo launched a social media campaign throughout the month of April to promote sustainable living and to make a difference in the communities they serve. Sodexo’s Better Tomorrow Commitments program will be showcased as everyone from employees, students, partners, managers, and residents make commitments to make the Earth a better place
Students shared their personal commitment for sustainability and took pictures that were posted to social media.
Ryan Deising, a sophomore civil engineering from Nashville, Tenn., made a commitment to pick up litter around campus.
“I think it’s great to bring awareness to the environment because it’s something our generation is going to have to deal with later on down the road. We need to be a clean sustainable campus. I don’t like seeing litter around campus or on the side of the street,” said Deising.
Larry Brown, a freshman emergency management technology major from Memphis, Tenn., said it is always nice to get involved with something that will help all mankind.
“I commit to making the earth a greener place and a better place for all creatures, whether it is a human or animal. We all live here…we all have to coexist, that’s why I support going green,” said Brown.
Alana Jackson, Unit Marketing Cooperator with Sodexo, is a part of the nationwide initiative where people from all over the U.S. are posting pictures about their commitment to sustainability.
“The Earth is what we have in common and if we don’t take the necessary steps to take care of it, it is not going to be a whole lot left for our future. We really want to look at ways that we can live healthier lives and by doing so we can help build our communities to be a better place,” said Jackson.
