The Delta Phi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. shined brightly on Jan. 22-25, at the District of Mississippi/ Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Conference.
The Delta Phi chapter participated in areas of academic, fraternal, community empowerment, educational and professional development opportunities and received many accolades and honors.
According to fraternity members, Alpha Phi Alpha is dedicated to developing leaders, promoting brotherhood, academic excellence, and providing service and advocacy for the community.
“When we got to district conference, I did not expect to win anything. Once they called our name everybody was shocked to know that we won,” said Kurtez Scott, Delta Phi chapter vice president.
Some of the awards that the chapter received included:
-Mississippi Chapter of the Year
-Mississippi Chapter with the Highest Cumulative GPA
-Mississippi Debate Team Champion
-Mississippi Scholars Bowl Champion
-Kurtez Scott/ Mississippi Belford V. Lawson Oratorical Champion
-Miss Charence Higgins/ Mississippi Miss Black & Gold
-Miss Charence Higgins/ Mississippi Miss Black & Gold Academic Achievement Award

After receiving all these awards, Henry Goss, junior mass communications major from Jackson, Miss. was then elected to serve as the Assistant Mississippi District Director. Goss will be recognized for being the highest ranking college member in the state. He will also be sworn in as a member of the Southern Regional Board of Directors in March of 2015.
“It’s a good feeling to win all these words and it lets everyone know, Jackson State and the state of Mississippi, that the Delta Phi Chapter believes in service, academics and that we reign supreme in all the different fields,” said Scott.
Students around campus found out that Charence Higgins was chosen to represent the Delta Phi chapter on Instagram. The campus buzzed with questions on how she was able to compete in the district pageant with the Delta Phi chapter not holding a pageant.
“There were numerous discrepancies with the scheduling of the pageant. We selected Charence based off the interviews we held for contestants to compete in the pageant,” said Goss.
Higgins, a junior psychology/theater major from Madison, Miss., was crowned as the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. 2014-2014 Miss Black & Gold for the district of Mississippi.
“I am really excited in implementing my platform which is ‘Creating the I in Me’. Also, participating in the regional pageant to represent the state of Miss,” said Higgins.
The chapter will travel to Orlando, Fla. from March 19-21 for the Southern Regional Conference to compete for additional scholarships and national titles.
