The first ever Presidents’ Day Gala was held to recognize Jackson State University organization presidents on Feb. 15 in the Student Center Ballrooms A & B.
A night of pure elegance and class describes event that was filled with illustrations of “What a Time to Be a Tiger”.
The event began with an entrance of the student organization presidents and their escorts, and was followed with a heartfelt welcome from Miss Jackson State University, Charence Higgins.
MADDRAMA Performance Troupe then gave a theatrical presentation that was dedicated to the student leaders on campus. This was followed by a dance from Rashad Moore, Student Government Association (SGA) president and his mother and other student organization presidents’ joined their escorts.
2012-2013 SGA President Brian Wilks delivered an honest and inspiring speech about leadership and encouragement.
“Wilks’ speech was very relatable for those who currently have leadership positions or who aspire to lead. I am glad that I was in attendance and I feel that anyone who plans to lead a large group should have been in attendance to hear this moving speech as he informed the audience about the truths behind holding a position,” said William H. Kelly III, associate editor of the Blue & White Flash editor and sophomore mass communication major from Houston, Texas.
Soon after, the State of the Student Body Address was given by Moore.
In his address, Moore gave insight of his future plans of incorporating Mr. JSU to the royal court, and placing computers and printers in every residence hall.
Asking all organization presidents to stand, Moore said,” Presidents are a truly unsung hero and a true hero isn’t measured by his or her strength, but by the measure of his or her heart.”
Bennie Walker, a junior speech communications and business major from Chicago, Ill. stated that the event was awesome.
“It (the gala) gave the presidents an opportunity to be recognized and it gave them hope to continue to serve the people of Jackson State University. Wilks’ address gave more inspiration to inspire the students here,” said Walker.
Ruqauya Calmes, a junior marketing major from Little Rock, Ark. was most inspired by Moore’s address.
“Rashad Moore gave us a new take on what leadership really is about. It was a great turn out in honoring the different presidents on campus who usually don’t get recognition,” said Calmes.
The night concluded with Jasmine Jackson, Executive Business Manager 2015-2016 giving a special presentation to the organization presidents.
