Jackson State Tigers fall to UNLV Rebels in season opener game

The Jackson State University Tigers fell in a large margin to FBS opponent University of Nevada, Las Vegas Rebels on Sept. 1.

With a final score of 63-13, the final score did not dim the enthusiasm of the football fans that travelled to Sam Boyd Stadium.

JSU starts the season 0-1, but looks for redemption against the Tennessee State University Tigers this Saturday in the annual Southern Heritage Classic.

Senior Quarterback LaMontiez Ivy from East Saint Louis, Ill., led the team with 14 of 34 passes for 134 yards and also rushed 11 yards on 5 attempts with an average of 2.2 yards per carry.

Senior RB Joshua Bates from Jackson, Miss., led the team in rushing with 32 yards on 8 attempts with an average of 4.0 yards per carry and two catches for 12 yards.

Freshman WR Carle Ollie from Jackson, Miss., led the team in receiving yards with 3 catches for 53 yards on a 19.5 average per catch. He left the game in the second quarter with a broken wrist. First team all-SWAC senior WR Daniel Williams caught 4 passes for 23 yards and made a couple of tackles on special teams.

Senior TE Tevin Garrett from Talladega, Ala., scored the Tiger’s first touchdown on an 11-yard connection from Ivy.  With 17 first downs, the Tigers total up 252 yards of offense (144 passing yard and 108 rushing yards).

JSU only had 2 penalties for 10 yards compare to UNLV 6 penalties for 61 yards. The Tigers won the time of possession battle 31:49 compare to the rebels 28:11.

Defensively, the Tigers had a tough time trying to tackle the Rebel’s offense to 503 yards of total offense (223 passing yards and 280 rushing yards) and 21 first downs. Freshman Kicker Christian Jacquemin from Miami, Fla., was perfect 2-2 on a 27 field goal in the second quarter and a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Jacquemin also had a good night at punting the football with 7 punts for 265 yards for 37.9 yards per kick and the longest kick was 57 yards.

The Tiger’s next opponent will be the Tigers of Tennessee State University. The Tigers bring in a 1-0 overall record with a victory over University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff. Tennessee State is on a one game-winning streak. The game will be Saturday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. in Memphis, Tenn., Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
