As members of the iGeneration, many college students have found websites and apps that make the college experience less stressful. Yes, we know about the hours and hours our parents spent in the library researching topics for school, and the tedious length of time spent thumbing through encyclopedias and other tangible reference material. But the advent of technology has made many of those tasks obsolete.
Trying to find a reasonably priced textbook? There are various websites to help in this search. Need to find all the information you can on a specific topic? Google it! The World Wide Web has made the college experience easier for the current generation.
The Flash has compiled five websites to aid college students in class work and saving money:
1. Chegg.com
Chegg is most widely known as a website that allows students to rent and buy textbooks for discounted prices. However, many students are unaware that the website offers way more than books. Chegg has an online tutoring program that allows students to ask for help on homework assignments. You pay $15 a week if you sign up for the weekly plan or you can pay for each session individually. If you sign up for the free trial, you can get the first thirty minutes of your tutoring session for free. Chegg also sends students emails about internships and part-time jobs they might be interested in.
2. RateMyProfessor.com
Trying to find a good professor to take is always a difficult task. Rate My Professor is a good tool to use to help students make these decisions. The website allows students to upload ratings and reviews of professors at their college or university. The reviews are set up into categories such as textbook use, level of difficulty, and attendance. The website also offers ratings for colleges and universities.
3. StudyBlue.com
Do you need help with a homework assignment but you are having trouble finding the solution in the textbook? Studyblue.com can help with that problem. StudyBlue is a website that is similar to Quizlet. This website offers flashcards for various subjects such as English, math, science and criminal justice. The flashcards are uploaded by other students and educators. The website also offers free homework help for assignments.
4. CitationMachine.net
Properly citing your sources in the correct format can be one of the most difficult parts of completing an essay. CitationMachine.net is an easier way to cite your sources in the correct format. If you are using an online source, all you have to do is copy and paste the link and it will automatically make the citation. For books, all you have to do is put the name of the book, the author’s name or the ISBN number and it will give you the correctly formatted citation. CitationMachine.net covers just about every reference material used and also allows the student to choose either APA, MLA and Chicago style.
5. Grammarly.com
Plagiarism has always been a serious issue when it comes to writing a paper. Being caught with plagiarized work, whether it was on purpose or by accident, comes with hefty consequences. A student can get an automatic F in a class and, in some serious cases, can be kicked out of school. Grammarly.com can help with this issue. You can upload your paper to the website and the Grammarly.com will detect any signs of plagiarism, grammar issues and incorrect spelling. In order to correct the errors, you have to make an account and pay for a subscription. Grammarly offers plans as low as $11.66 a month and as high as $29.95 a month.
