Over the past nine months, the world has gotten used to washing their hands more often, using more bleach, and washing their hands again.
However, there is some professionals that go above and beyond just washing their hands, and that is the people who clean up the spaces that many do not think twice about, the custodial staff.
It is not an easy job cleaning after people or making sure that surfaces stay sanitized, but it is an imperative job for what has become “the new normal.”
Jackson State University hires an outside source for custodial staffing and according to a video on their website, there are plenty of new and high tech procedures being implemented into the new standards of cleaning and sanitizing the campus.
There are many new steps that have been implemented into cleaning the university daily, weekly and monthly.
The Covid-19 Coronavirus has called for a new way of sanitation when it comes to public places and that includes universities. The custodial staffs that visit and work on JSU’s campus are an imperative part of keeping JSU running for students and staff.
Briunna Outlaw, a business administration major from Jackson, Miss., believes that opening the school fully was very dangerous.
“We need more custodial staff at this point because it is very serious,” said Outlaw.
Outlaw may understand the severity of the situation that could be presented to college students.
Another student who has concerns about the sanitation of JSU is LaKara Lewis.
Lewis, a business marketing major from Dallas, Texas, is one of the students who decided to return to campus this semester.
She stays in University Point on campus and seemed is relatively pleased with the cleaning standards of her residence.
“I had concerns about the overall cleaning conditions on the campus but cleaning hasn’t been that much of an issue,” said Lewis.
Lewis added, “I do have concerns that cleaning hasn’t been very much up to par. They could always be doing better when it comes to the overall safety and protection of students and staff.”
SSC Service Solutions is the custodial service that Jackson State University uses on campus. They gave no response when asked about new procedures that they have implemented into the everyday cleaning procedures. Nor what was being used to clean and sanitize Jackson State University campus locations.

If you are not feeling well or feel sick do not leave your dormitory and notify health officials on campus immediately. Doing so will make it easier for the custodial staff to know where to focus a little more on specific areas.
According to the National Institute of Health’s website SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) remained active on:
- Plastic and stainless-steel surfaces for two to three day
- 24 hours on cardboard
- Four hours on copper
- The virus was detectable in aerosols for up to three hours.
