What an amazing time it is at Jackson State University as the Spring season has been owned by the Tigers so far.
The Tigers of Jackson State University are currently 37-1 in six sports across the SWAC conference. This is one of Jackson State’s best starts in sports in school history and has proven that the Tigers are a force amongst not only HBCU sports, but college sports in general.
This past weekend both the men and women’s basketball team of JSU won the regular season championship in the SWAC. This was the Lady Tigers second year in a row winning the conference as they looked to pick up where they left off last season. Covid-19 prevented the Lady Tigers from competing in the SWAC tournament and possibly advancing to the NCAA tournament in 2020.
This season has been historical for both programs as they dismantled all competition in their respective conference and players on both teams earned individual awards. The men’s team finished their regular season defeating Alabama State, 79-54 improving to 11-0 in conference and 11-5 overall for the season.
The Lady Tigers finished their regular season defeating Alabama State as well 64-62 with a 14-1 conference record and 15-5 overall record. Both teams look to compete in the SWAC tournament this weekend in Birmingham, Ala.
Things have been terrific as well for the JSU football team as they defeated Grambling State University 33-28 this past weekend for the first time in nearly a decade. The Tigers are off to a 2-0 start to this season and look to continue their win streak against Mississippi Valley this weekend.
The women’s volleyball has been dismantling competition throughout the SWAC as they are currently 6-0 for the season after sweeping Mississippi Valley. The Lady Tigers have swept four out of their six opponents so far for the season.
The women’s soccer team also opened their season with a victory as they defeated longtime rival in the SWAC, Alcorn State University. The Lady Tigers will return to the field this weekend as they take on Alabama A&M in their home opener.
Taronta Gines, a senior accounting major from Moss Point, Miss., believes JSU can win SWAC in all sports during the spring season.
“Since I’ve been at JSU the sports teams were really mediocre and with everything going on as far as the pandemic, I feel like we need them to win. College is no longer fun anymore and it’s hard to just focus on your education without any escape. So far this season, JSU has been winning. I honestly can get used to that”.
Nakaela Cobb, a junior education major from Chicago, Ill., is so excited for what JSU has done so far this season.
“The spring season has been amazing so far. I’m just glad the players have the opportunity to compete considering they didn’t have that opportunity last year. I thought I was never going to see the day JSU has a winning record in sports in nearly every sport”.
