After a restful weekend, the internet is still debating about Hermes Birkin Bags.

The debate began after Saweetie, a West Coast rapper and also girlfriend to Atlanta rapper, Quavo, created an Instagram live story telling women, “If he is not getting you a Birkin, if he is not paying for your bills, then throw that man back to the streets.”

The video went viral over several social media platforms and was reposted by gossip page, ‘The Shade Room’ and received more than 3.3 million views.

Fans had mixed emotions about the video, some agreeing with the “Icy Girl” rapper, while others argued that the bags were overpriced and overrated.

A Twitter user called out Saweetie for asking a man to buy a Birkin for her.

“But can YOU buy YOU a Birkin? Can YOU afford the lifestyle you are trying to love? Are you looking for a sponsor or a partner?” the fan tweeted.

Rapper Cardi B and her husband Offset, a member of rap group the Migos, were both well-versed in all things Birkin, and decided to chime in on the debate.

“Stop letting people on the internet tell y’all who you can get a Birkin at the store, and how many Birkin’s you can get,” Offset’s caption said on Instagram. “Black people having access to luxury shouldn’t be a debate… by the way hip-hop starts the trends,” he added.

The picture that he shared showed them both sporting four new luxury bags.

Cardi B had much to say as well, recording a three-minute video responding to a tweet saying that she and other women in the rap game are depreciating the value of a Birkin.

“First things first, I definitely could get a bag- actually got four bags today from the Hermes store. Second of all, why is that y’all asking female rappers if they can get a bag from the Hermes store. Ya’ll don’t do that to these white celebrities,” she stated.

Kayla Nicole Jones, also known as ‘Nicole TV’ on social media, also pitched in about the debate. “The last thing the world needs right now is a bunch of entitled, loud, and spoiled adults having rich people problems with Birkin debates,” she stated on her Instagram story. “What are y’all in a hurry to prove to people you have more than already?” Jones continued.

Many fans still have mixed opinions about the ongoing debate on this particular bag.

Makala Scott, a senior biology major from Tulsa, Okla., explained how she felt about the situation.

“A man is supposed to be a provider so it is okay for a man to treat a woman to nice things such as a Birkin bag,” Scott explained. “It is more so about a woman knowing her worth and a man appreciating her worth.”

Jana Bryd, a senior finance major from Huntsville, Ala., also agreed with Scott.

“When it comes to the whole Birkin bag debate, I think that a woman should be treated with nice things especially if she works hard,” declared Byrd. “Now do I think I should kick someone to the curb because he isn’t paying my bills and buying me purses? I think that is a little much,” she giggled.
