<\/a>Diamond Jenkins<\/strong> Jackson State University has crowned a new queen. Miss JSU, Sarah Brown, a senior physics major from Jackson, Miss., was officially crowned at her coronation on Oct. 18.<\/p>\n The theme of the coronation was reminiscent of a scene from\u00a0 the \u201cHarlem Nights.\u201d\u00a0 Brown entered the Lee E. Williams Athletic Assembly Center in a classic vintage yellow Bentley.<\/p>\n The annual event also gave representatives of student organizations a chance to don elegant gowns and tuxedos. Rhythmic performances by the JSU Dance Ensemble and the verbal artistry of Outspoken helped make the event one to remember.<\/p>\n Brian Wilkes, JSU Student Government Association President, introduced Brown after she stepped out of the vintage 1940\u2019s car.<\/p>\n \u201cI remember the first time I met Sarah. We had a class together our freshman year; Sarah came into the class and announced \u2018Hello class, my name is Sarah Brown and I am going to be Miss Jackson State University 2012-2013.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Wilkes mentioned that from that point on he had made a friend in Brown.<\/p>\n Brown said that she did not prepare a speech for the coronation simply because she has always been told that the best story is your own story.<\/p>\n Brown gave an impromptu\u00a0 acceptance speech highlighted by a presentation to her family and greatest supporters at Jackson State.<\/p>\n Brown thanked her mother, Jawanday Blue and commended her for overcoming the negative stereotypes associated with being a single mother.<\/p>\n Brown also showed her appreciation to the student body, faculty and staff at\u00a0 JSU for electing and assisting her as Miss JSU.<\/p>\n \u201cA lot of my peers doubted my decision to run for Miss JSU because I wasn\u2019t involved in anything and I wasn\u2019t that social.\u00a0 I stayed in my books, but I knew that I was going to be Miss JacksonState University. It is something that I have wanted since the age of fifteen,\u201d said Brown.<\/p>\n She added: \u201cWhen I was officially crowned as Miss Jackson State, it was a very special moment because I am now able to serve the school and move forward with my platform.\u201d<\/p>\n After being sworn in by SGA Chief Justice Jeremy Sanford and crowned by JSU President Dr. Carolyn W. Meyers, Brown was adorned\u00a0 with a long, royal blue cape and scepter.<\/p>\n Brown is committed to continuing implementation of her platform \u2018Think BIG,\u2019\u00a0 by hosting public service events, creating various forums, and trying her best to bridge the gap between Jackson State and the community to impact the lives of others and the future.<\/p>\n \u201cI have been able to remain humble with [the title] of Miss JSU by not listening to what other people say and trusting in God. When you make it, you will always have negative criticism. I don\u2019t listen to negativity.\u201d<\/p>\n Brown is also planning to implement a project for next semester that will allow Greek organizations and non-Greek members to collaborate with each other, along with \u201cWork Out with Miss JSU\u201d and extend the Queen\u2019s Campaign.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Diamond Jenkins Blue & White Flash \/ Associate\u00a0 Editor Jackson State University has crowned a new queen.
