<\/a>Special to the Flash<\/em><\/p>\n Jackson State University showed appreciation for its student veterans and military personnel on Nov. 10-11 by recognizing and honoring the service of these individuals.<\/p>\n \u201cWe owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to those who have served and those currently standing in harm’s way.\u00a0 We must remember their sacrifice and keep the promise to our veterans by giving them the recognition they deserve,\u201d said Tim Abram, Director of the JSU Veteran\u2019s and Military Center.<\/p>\n On Tuesday Nov. 10 the City of Jackson Fire Department displayed a large American flag above the campus in honor of Veteran\u2019s Day and the JSU Air Force and Army ROTC departments along with Residential Hall Association hosted a hotspot.\u00a0 Free military giveaways and prizes for all who attended were passed out.<\/p>\n On Wednesday Nov. 11, The Veterans & Military Center in conjunction with the Division of Academic & Student Affairs and the College of Public Service hosted a “Complimentary Breakfast” for any veterans, service-members, military dependents and supporters of veterans.\u00a0 The guest speaker for the breakfast was\u00a0Dr. Martha McRavin-Oliver a retired Army Colonel.<\/p>\n The JSU bookstore, Subway, barbershop and\u00a0Royal Bleu Boutique gave discounts for any veteran or military member.<\/p>\n Special guests in attendance at the event included: Steve Guyton,\u00a0a military representative for Mississippi Senator Roger Wicker’s office, Marshand Crisler, CAO-Public Safety from the City of Jackson, Miss. and Chief Chaplain Michael Harris from the Jackson VA Medical Center.<\/p>\n Other restaurants and retail stores in the community also showed their appreciation for veterans and military personnel by offering discounts on Nov. 11.\u00a0 Some of these included: Applebees, Buffalo Wild Wings, Golden Coral, Dollar General, Home Depot, JC Penny and many more.<\/p>\n Veterans Day, celebrated nationally on Nov. 11, is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, the agreement which ended World War I hostilities between the allied nations and Germany in 1918.
