<\/a>WJSU, Jackson State University\u2019s Cool and Current Jazz radio station, was among the winners in the Louisiana-Mississippi Associated Press competition honoring the best in broadcast journalism and newspapers on Saturday, April 6.<\/p>\n
During the annual AP Awards Dinner, JSUTV\u2019s General Manager, Rob Jay, won first place in the Sportscast or Sports Program Category. The Judges comment stated, \u201cExcellent production, good use of sound and music.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eric Walker won two second place awards in the Achievement and Short Feature Story categories.<\/p>\n
His award in the Achievement Category was titled Cindy Hyde-Smith Controversy. The Judges stated, that the video followed an election controversy that garnered national attention with focus on local concerns.<\/p>\n
Walker also won the award for Short Feature Story Category, \u201cMedgar Evers 55 years later\u201d.\u00a0The Judges commented that the video was a good collection of strong voices speaking to a historical tragedy and its resonance more than half a century later.<\/p>\n
Former WJSU News Director, Dwain Doty, won second place in the Long Feature Story Category. The story, \u201cVictims of Crime Tree Lighting Ceremony\u201d was said by the judges to be a sensitive handling of a sad, but hopeful story of the triumph of human spirit over tragedy.<\/p>\n
WJSU General Manager, Anthony Dean, stated, \u201cWinning these awards is a testament to the high standards we have set at WJSU and JSU-TV.\u00a0\u00a0Working together has stimulated growth and creativity in the broadcast division of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies.<\/p>\n
The annual contest for AP-member broadcasters and newspapers was conducted by the Louisiana-Mississippi AP Broadcasters and Media Editors and sponsored by the University of Mississippi School of Journalism and New Media.<\/p>\n
