SUMMARY:Jackson State University High School Band & Dance Camp
DESCRIPTION:The Jackson State University “Sonic Boom of the South” High School Band & Dance Camp is a week-long intensive educational experience for students and band directors. Students get an opportunity to learn from the JSU Band Staff and SBOTS (Sonic Boom of the South) Student Leaders while getting a firsthand view on what it takes to be a part of THEE FAMOUS Sonic Boom of the South. Not only will students learn instrumental techniques and marching methods but they will also learn about social and emotional growth\, college readiness\, and and overall have a great time. Band Directors will have an opportunity to learn from highly experienced music educators who have proven to be successful in their field. If you or your child is interested in JSU or just a great musical experience\, this camp is for you! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate: June 8\, 2025 – June 14\, 2025  \n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: Jackson State University \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApplication Time Frame: February 14\, 2025 – May 14\, 2025 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGrade/Age: Incoming 9th-Incoming College Students (Age 14-19) \n\n\n\nJSU is committed to creating educational opportunities for all students however\, this camp is not necessarily designed for beginner students with limited marching band experience. \n\n\n\nOUR CAMP IS HARD WORK! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCost:  \n\n\n\n$500 – Residential Camper (meals and on-campus lodging are provided. \n\n\n\n$300 – Commuter Camper (meals are provided but on-campus lodging is not provided) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBasic Schedule:  \n\n\n\n*Physical Training (PT) \n\n\n\n*Breakfast \n\n\n\n*Breakout Chamber – Large Ensembles/Sessions \n\n\n\n*Lunch \n\n\n\n*Indoor Marching Band Rehearsal \n\n\n\n*Dinner \n\n\n\n*Outdoor Marching Band Rehearsal \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCamp Ensembles/Courses:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDrum Major Techniques: Designed to allow students to learn fitness concepts\, conditioning techniques\, basic marching styles\, conducting\, and leadership techniques to be successful. \n\n\n\nWoodwind Ensemble: Designed to introduce basic techniques and fundamentals\, instrumental care\, ideologies\, and pedagogical approaches to instruments within the woodwind family. \n\n\n\nBrass Ensemble: Designed to introduce basic techniques and fundamentals\, instrumental care\, ideologies\, and pedagogical approaches to instruments within the brass family. \n\n\n\nPercussion Ensemble: Designed to introduce basic techniques and fundamentals\, instrumental care\, ideologies\, and pedagogical approaches to instruments within the percussion family. \n\n\n\nConcert Band: Designed to give upper-level musicians to be exposed to appropriate literature and expand their musical experience in a large fully instrumented ensemble. \n\n\n\nDance Techniques: Designed to allow dancers to learn/enhance basic dance techniques while exercising and stretching to improve performance\, and endurance and prevent injury. \n\n\n\nSpecial Topics: An exploration of marching band techniques through lectures from the University Band Staff highlighting a few skills in learning how to prepare\, organize\, teach\, and rehearse a band program. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFAQs\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWill my child be allowed to stay on campus? \n\nYes\n\n\n\n\n\nWill students be allowed to participate if they do not stay on campus?\n\nYes\, as a commuter\n\n\n\n\n\nWill chaperones be allowed to attend?\n\nYes\, they will and they will have to pay\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat kind of residency halls will my student(s) stay in?\n\nResidence halls will be determined\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat will be needed for students staying on campus?\n\nToiletries\, bedding for XL Twin beds\, microwave\, mini-refrigerators\, air fryers\, TV\, video game consoles\n\n\n\n\n\nWill instruments be provided?\n\nIt is preferred that students bring their own instruments including large instruments (sousaphones\, drums\, etc.) If a student is traveling by plane and has a large instrument\, please contact us at jsubands@jsums.edu\n\n\n\n\n\nWill meals be provided?\n\nYes meals will be provided (breakfast\, lunch\, dinner)\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is the attire for camp?\n\nWhite T-shirt\, blue shorts\, white socks\, and white shoes. Students will also need concert white(top)/black(bottom) attire for concert(s).\n\n\n\n\n\nWill my student(s) be taken care of?\n\nYes\, we take a vested interest in the safety of all participants. Students will be busy the majority of the camp.\n\n\n\n\n\nWill there be any other activities for students other than rehearsal?\n\nYes\, there will be Q&A sessions along with a talent show!\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen will parents receive other detailed information regarding camp?\n\nAfter the June 1 deadline\, this will include music as well\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen are the performances?\n\nConcerts are Friday nights at 6 p.m. and the marching band performs on Saturday at 4 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n\nI’m booking flights. When is registration and check out?\n\nRegistration is Sunday at 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.; check-out will be Saturday at 11 p.m. The performance will be done by 5 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n\nWill there be transportation available from the airport/bus station to campus?\n\nNo\, not by JSU.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSign Up Here
