SPOILER ALERT

Netflix released “His & Hers”, directed by William Oldroyd and Anja Marquardt, and the limited series quickly rose to the No. 1 spot on the platform, where it remained for several weeks. The show centers on a separated married couple — one a detective and the other a journalist — as they investigate a murder while suspecting each other.

Tessa Thompson stars as Anna, a journalist who returns to her small hometown in Georgia after a year, following the death of her child. The loss has fractured her relationship with her estranged husband, Jack, as both struggle with the absence of their daughter. As the investigation unfolds, their dynamic remains tense, yet their undying love endures, most clearly shown when Jack saves Anna’s life in the final episode.

Jack, portrayed by Jon Bernthal, harbors a damaging secret that could jeopardize his career while simultaneously advancing Anna’s. Though he is not depicted as a brilliant detective, Jack works relentlessly to conceal his involvement from both his partner, Priya, played by Sunita Mani, and Anna, his former spouse. Viewers are aware of Jack’s connection to the murder victim, but the other characters remain in the dark.

As Anna attempts to revive her career by covering the case, she must confront the past she hoped to leave behind. The traumatic death of her daughter resurfaces through recurring flashbacks as she navigates the investigation.

Lexy, portrayed by Rebecca Rittenhouse, becomes Anna’s professional rival after taking over her former job. Despite falling behind Lexy’s success, Anna is determined to reclaim her standing.

Beyond professional tension, Anna also faces hostility from her former high school friend group, who taunt her as she digs deeper into the case. The investigation takes a darker, suspenseful turn when Jack receives a call reporting a new dead body. The friend group begins to shrink, and it becomes clear that someone is targeting them.

Anna arrives first at the scene, but Jack is the last person seen with the victim, Helen Wang, the high school principal they once attended. Wang, portrayed by Poppy Liu, was best friends with the earlier victim, and both women were discovered with friendship bracelets in their mouths. This eerie signature raises questions about the threats the group has received.

As the series progresses, the suspense intensifies, and the number of suspects grows. It is revealed that the high school friend group plays a crucial role in the larger mystery. Catherine, revealed to be Lexy, is the last surviving member of the group, aside from Anna. Her character sheds light on secrets long hidden from the public, reinforcing the idea that those overlooked often hold the most damaging truths.

Anna’s mother, Alice, portrayed by Crystal R. Fox, appears frequently throughout the series. Though she initially seems like a minor character, her presence becomes pivotal as the narrative threads converge, tying up loose ends, including those connected to Anna’s family.

“His & Hers” is a five-episode, binge-worthy series that constantly challenges viewers’ assumptions. What begins as a single homicide escalates into a case involving four deaths. In the final 10 minutes, a final plot twist reshapes the entire narrative and forces viewers to reconsider everything they believed about the killer.
