Students get in shape for spring and summer

As summer approaches, students are preparing to get in shape for beach vacations and other outside activities by visiting the gym and dieting.

Some ways of getting into shape include watching what you eat and getting regular exercise.

In addition to healthy eating, students hoping to look good in spring and summer attire can utilize the services of the Walter Payton Center.

Fatima Asaan, a junior business administrative major from Gulf Port, Miss., said taking a cruise for spring break help motivate her.

“I wanted to be in the best shape possible traveling to the Bahamas,” said Asaan. “I am currently attending the Boot Camp: Back to Basics class twice a week at the WPC along with using the gym equipment.”

She added, “I have been eating the same but cutting back on fried foods, drinking plenty of water and staying away from soda and I am seeing good results.”

Rachel Cowan with the Walter Payton Center (WPC) said that many students could get into shape by utilizing the equipment and activities at the WPC.

Other JSU students shared their suggestions on how to stay healthy.

Maurice Tyler, a sophomore industrial technology major from New Hebron, Miss., said, “Drink plenty of water and stay away from fried foods.” He added, “Eat salad and vegetables too.”

Joshua Kirk, a junior criminal justice major from Chicago, Ill. said, “Once you start working out continue working at it and lift weights to stay toned.”  He added, “Cut down on junk food and proportion your meal size and try to eat three meals a day.”
