Jalil Johnson, a former Jackson State University football player, has been picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars during the summer as a free agent. The Leland, Miss. native came to JSU in 2009 from Mississippi Delta Community College. According to JSU Sports Media Relations, Johnson was a 2010 All SWAC Performer and as a senior he recorded 40 tackles, four tackles for loss, two interceptions, 14 pass breakups and two fumble recoveries. During his junior season he recorded 19 tackles, four pass deflections and recovered a fumble.

JSU coach Antonio Knight, who is in his sixth season as linebacker coach and NFL Liaison, described Johnson as a hard working, humble, dedicated player who loves the game of football and played like he wanted to go to the next level.

“Some guys talk about going to the NFL and others worked to get in and he was one of the ones to work and got there,” said Knight.

Knight also said that Johnson was very enthusiastic, competitive, and a smart football player who didn’t have to show leadership by talking.
Former teammate Donovan Robinson agreed with Knight’s assessment of Johnson.

“He was a hard worker and determined. Playing on the team with him was beneficial and I was happy and excited for him when I found out he was picked up by the Jaguars,” said Robinson, a senior defensive end from Milwaukee, Wisc., majoring in criminal justice. “He was definitely the hardest worker on the team, quote on quote, hard work pays off.”

Knight stated that Johnson’s acquisition into the NFL continues to show the recent success of other former JSU defensive players.

“Along with Johnson, it’s been a trend of defensive backs for the past three years; Marcel Young playing for Hamilton Canadian Football League and Dominique Johnson playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” said Knight.

Both Knight and Robinson stated that more wins and professional athletes should be expected from the Jackson State University Tigers Football Team.
