There is a new king and queen on campus! On Aug. 25, the class of 2015 voted Quentin Hendree and Taylor Johnson as Jackson State University’s Mr. and Miss Freshman.
An Atlanta, Ga. native, Johnson is a mass communications major with a concentration in multimedia journalism. With her bachelor’s degree, she plans to work as a journalist or as a news anchor.
“Being Miss Freshman makes me feel honored and humble because the position gives me a sense of responsibility knowing people watch and respect you,” said Johnson. “I’m looking forward to the excitement of the football games, the energy of the people (JSU fans) and the outfits.”
Hendree, a Memphis, Tenn. native, is a business administration major who plans to own a successful businesses following in the footsteps of his uncle.
“I chose JSU because it feels like home to me. I had always attended the Southern Heritage classic, so the school was familiar to me,” said Hendree. “With the aid of others, I made efforts in campaigning by putting posters up around campus and spreading the word. I did not just wake up overnight and decide I wanted to be Mr. Freshman, it has been a goal of mine,” Hendree added.
He added, “Most people don’t know that I can sing like Trey Songz, at least I THINK!”
“I am above the ground and the ground is not above me” and “Struggle now, enjoy later” are quotes that he lives by and as Mr. Freshman, he hopes to set standards for the
class of 2015.
“I plan on getting involved in community service and planning events for my graduating class.”
These additions to the royal court believe in Miss JSU Mea Ashley’s platform of ‘setting admirable standards’ on a level of high standard.
Johnson also added that she looks up to Ashley.
“I look up to her because she is not only Miss JSU, but I get to see her normal and laid-back side, which is great to see!”
One of Miss Freshman’s favorite quotes is Proverb 31:30, “Favor is deceitful, beauty is vein, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
Johnson said: “I have matured in many ways, personally and as a student. I am more opinionated as well. Whoever would have thought that there would be a 2010 let alone a 2015?”
