One thing is sure: the 2025 HBCU Legacy Bowl proved once again that talent at HBCUs is alive and well. The 2025 HBCU Legacy Bowl once again provided a platform for some of the best talent from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to showcase their skills.
Held at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans, this year’s game was a highly competitive matchup, with Team Robinson edging out Team Gaither 17-14. More than just a game, the Legacy Bowl serves as a vital opportunity for HBCU players to gain exposure ahead of the NFL Draft.
Several standout performances highlighted the talent depth within HBCU programs, making a strong case for these players to get looks from professional scouts.
One of the most dominant performances of the game came from Alabama State’s defensive lineman, Treqwan Thomas. Thomas was a constant presence in the backfield, racking up four sacks and earning defensive MVP honors. His relentless pressure played a crucial role in Team Robinson’s win.
Reflecting on his performance, Thomas remained humble about his success.
“I just did my one of 11’s, bro. I did my job, my teammates did their job, and hey, I came out with four,” said Thomas.
Throughout his collegiate career, Thomas has been a force, finishing the 2024 season with 64 tackles, 12 sacks, and five forced fumbles. His strong showing at the HBCU Combine further solidified his status as a serious NFL prospect, with a 4.91-second 40-yard dash and a 30.5-inch vertical jump.
Jackson State University senior Jaylin Acker, who attended the game, believes Thomas has a real shot at the next level.
“Treqwan is a beast. Watching him live, you can just see how disruptive he is. He’s got NFL size, speed, and power. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets drafted,” said Acker.
Defense was the theme of the day, and the secondary play was just as impactful as the pass rush. North Carolina Central’s cornerback, Kole Jones, and Alabama State’s safety, Amon Scarbrough, each came up with crucial interceptions. Scarbrough’s pick in the closing moments sealed the victory for Team Robinson.
Their performances not only helped their teams in the game but also boosted their stock in the eyes of scouts. Both players showed great instincts and ball-hawking ability, traits that are highly valued at the next level.
Apollo Criglar, a senior journalism and media studies from Kansas City, Mo., believes exposure from the Legacy Bowl is crucial for HBCU players.
“A lot of these guys don’t get the same spotlight as players from bigger schools. But when you see what they can do in this game, you realize they belong in the conversation for the NFL. It’s great that they have this chance to shine,” said Criglar.
While the defense stole the show, several offensive players made strong cases for themselves. Though Team Robinson’s 17 points were the lowest winning total in the game’s history, the offense still had bright spots.
Quarterbacks showcased their arm talent and mobility with deep completions and key scrambles. Wide receivers displayed excellent route-running and hands, proving they could separate from defenders. The running backs fought for every yard, showing toughness and vision.
NFL analyst Charles Davis emphasized the importance of the Legacy Bowl in providing exposure for talented players who might otherwise be overlooked.
Events like the HBCU Legacy Bowl play a crucial role in showcasing the talent and abilities of players who may not receive the same recognition as those from Power Five schools. Scouts are observing, and every performance matters.
