{"id":13319,"date":"2025-10-05T20:28:24","date_gmt":"2025-10-05T20:28:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.jsums.edu\/theflash\/?p=13319"},"modified":"2025-10-09T16:17:42","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T16:17:42","slug":"whats-the-tea-event-encouraged-freshmen-and-transfer-students-to-embrace-the-college-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.jsums.edu\/theflash\/index.php\/2025\/10\/05\/whats-the-tea-event-encouraged-freshmen-and-transfer-students-to-embrace-the-college-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"What\u2019s the Tea event encouraged freshmen and transfer students to embrace the college experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hannah Robinson<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staff Writer<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue S.T.R.E.A.K. and Tiger Transfers and Commuters (TTC) at Jackson State University held their &#8220;What&#8217;s Tea about Thee&#8221; on Aug. 25 in the\u00a0 College of Science, Engineering, and Technology Building Auditorium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event aimed to inform freshmen and transfer students about embracing the college experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jazmyn Littles, President of Blue Streak, shared practical tips on decorum and navigating campus life with attendees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Littles informed the students that applications for many of the organizations were currently open and also highlighted campus resources, including: TRIO, a college initiative focused on guiding first-generation college students, the Center for Student Engagement and Leadership (CSEL), the Student Center, the Latasha Norman Center (LNC), Honors College, and other programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Joining student organizations on campus is great for networking with people with similar interests as you,&#8221; said Littles, a senior physics major from Picayune, Miss.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advice on how to properly engage as a college freshman was discussed:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respect yourself as well as your learning environment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get involved with campus organizations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Utilize campus resources to your advantage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Form relationships with peers and the professionals around you<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose your friends wisely<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don&#8217;t be afraid to speak up\/ask questions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone makes mistakes; learn from them<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find a study schedule\/strategy that works best for you<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get plenty of rest<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the presentation, a panel of six student leaders sat down for &#8220;the tea&#8221; and invited students to share common concerns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The discussion heated up when Italian Johnson, a senior physics major from Edwards, Miss., dove into the importance of being organized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Being a college student is like having a full-time job. To have a successful college career, dedication, hard work, and sacrifice are key attributes students must have. Invest in a planner to schedule tests, projects, and homework. Writing things down always helps,&#8221; said Johnson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panelists and students continued a lively conversation, with the panelists answering many questions and addressing other concerns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the program&#8217;s highlights included the student panelists discussing their personal experiences on JSU issues and general college life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kayla Sanders, a junior social work major, was very pleased with the information shared during the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I loved the &#8220;What&#8217;s Tea About Thee&#8221; event because it gives the freshmen insights about what happens at Jackson State that isn&#8217;t always broadcast or shown. It lets them know what to do if they do encounter a similar experience that an upperclassman has already experienced, also letting them know they&#8217;re never alone.
