{"id":1980,"date":"2013-04-11T15:58:38","date_gmt":"2013-04-11T15:58:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.jsums.edu\/jsuflash\/?p=1980"},"modified":"2013-04-11T15:58:38","modified_gmt":"2013-04-11T15:58:38","slug":"rapper-rick-ross-under-fire-for-controversial-lyrics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.jsums.edu\/theflash\/index.php\/2013\/04\/11\/rapper-rick-ross-under-fire-for-controversial-lyrics\/","title":{"rendered":"Rapper Rick Ross under fire for controversial lyrics"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1981\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1981\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.jsums.edu\/theflash2025\/files\/2013\/04\/rickross.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1981\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.jsums.edu\/theflash2025\/files\/2013\/04\/rickross-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1981\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hip-Hop artist Rick Ross.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Mark Brayboy<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Blue &amp; White Flash\/Staff Writer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hip-hop superstar Rick Ross is once again under fire.\u00a0 He has most recently sparked controversy because of his rap lyrics in a song with from Atlanta, Ga. rapper Rocko.\u00a0 Many outraged fans, fellow artists like Talib Kweli and the women\u2019s rights group, UltraViolet, alleges that Ross\u2019 lyrics promote date rape, drug use and sexual assault against women.<\/p>\n<p>In the song \u201cU.O.E.N.O.\u201d by Rocko and fellow Atlanta, Ga. artist Future, Ross spits the lyrics, \u2018Put molly all in her champagne, she don\u2019t even know it\/I took her home and I enjoyed that, she don\u2019t even know it,\u2019 causing a backlash of criticisms that he was glorifying date rape.\u00a0 Facing intense pressure, he has since apologized for the lyrics, both on Twitter and New Orleans, La. radio station Q93.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a misunderstanding with a lyric, a misinterpretation where the term \u2018rape\u2019 wasn\u2019t used. You know, I would never use the term rape in my records. I just wanted to reach out to all the sexy ladies, all the beautiful ladies that had been reaching out to me with the misunderstanding: we don\u2019t condone rape and I\u2019m not with that,\u201d said Ross.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of his apology, many of his female fans feel as if the apology was not sincere enough and felt that he was very wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Jerlisha Gipson, a senior healthcare administration major from Batesville, Miss, said, \u201cI just don\u2019t believe his apology was sincere and I felt that it was forced. He had to apologize because of the pressure he\u2019s received from women, but I just don\u2019t believe it was from his heart. Why would you even rap about putting a drug in someone\u2019s drink and they don\u2019t know it?\u201d said Gipson.<\/p>\n<p>Randrika Anderson, a sophomore theater major from Canton, Miss. said, \u201cI feel that he should be aware of the words hat he says because he has a major influence on young black men and rape is something that should not be made a mockery of in any sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The controversy has also jeopardized Ross\u2019s Reebok endorsement in wake of UltraViolet\u2019s campaign and massive protest against Reebok and Rick Ross, demanding that the sneaker company should cut all ties Ross because he glorifies and promotes date rape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time for Reebok to stop using their brand as a platform to dictate to women what counts as rape,\u201d said Nita Chaudhary, co-founder of UltraViolet on weareultraviolet.org.\u00a0 \u201cContrary to Ross\u2019 claims, there was no misinterpretation here: Slipping a woman a drug and \u2018enjoying that\u2019 is rape, plain and simple. It\u2019s time for them to answer the 72,000 former customers who want them to stop promoting violence against women and fire Rick Ross.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to their website, weareultraviolet.org, their petition for Reebok to fire Ross has gathered over 51,000 signatures, 15 hours after it went viral and was released.\u00a0 The petition has gathered over 71,000 signatures thus far.<\/p>\n<p>To further add to Ross\u2019 worries, one of his recent concerts in Ontario, Canada has been cancelled due to the protests.\u00a0 The lyrics he layed\u00a0 on the track have recently been removed from radio versions.<\/p>\n<p>Jasmine Trueman, a sophomore elementary education major from Baton Rouge, La. said that his lyrics may have a detrimental effect on the youth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe still shouldn\u2019t have said it because he would be held accountable if someone follows through with it. He\u2019s still a role model.
