\u201cLeadership is a privilege, not a perk,\u201d said Judge Glenda Hatchett on March 29th at the Emerging Leaders Leadership Summit held in Jackson State University Student Center.<\/p>\n

The event was held to promote leadership skills to current and potential Student Government Association representatives and other students.\u00a0 Other speakers included: Ty Howard, Michael Anderson, Ricardo Brown and Abe McGlothin, who facilitated presentations for different sessions to students on leadership enhancement.\u00a0 Keynote speaker, Judge Hatchet, closed with a powerful message on how to live and lead with a purpose.<\/p>\n

Judge Hatchett invigorated the students with her presentation, \u2018Dare to take charge: How to Live & Lead with Purpose.<\/p>\n

Judge Hatchett shared her story about overcoming challenges to become successful.<\/p>\n

\u201cBe authentic! People can see when you\u2019re full of\u2026junk,\u201d said Hatchett.<\/p>\n

She encouraged students to be honest with others, informing students that as leaders, people cannot follow you if they do not trust you.\u00a0 She also stated that students should not let negative people get them down.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeal with haters by being successful and doing what you said you were going to do and leave them wandering how you pulled it off,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Opening session speaker Ty Howard assumed the role of train conductor as he blew a whistle for people to \u2018Board Their Train to Purpose-Driven Leadership Success\u2019.\u00a0 Howard encouraged students to surround themselves with high-performers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would rather work with one passionate person than some who are merely interested,\u201d said Howard.<\/p>\n

Using the acronym F.E.A.R.: False Emotions Acting Recklessly, Howard encouraged students to lead practically with sound judgment and board their trains to challenge and change leadership.<\/p>\n

Howard presented nine tips on how to become a successful leader.<\/p>\n

1. Stay ready rather than get ready.<\/p>\n

2. Re-engage by seeing the value in what is pursued.<\/p>\n

3. Acknowledge who, what, why and how a student is as a person.<\/p>\n

4. Challenge and improve the attitude daily by recognizing that there is always room for improvement.<\/p>\n

5. Do things that others will not do and you will receive the results other do not.<\/p>\n

6. Quit marking time and move forward<\/p>\n

7. Lessen the stress in life.<\/p>\n

8. Give on-going relationships a tune-up.<\/p>\n

9. Have fun and be happy<\/p>\n
