Anthony Brown and Sybil Wilkes.

Joyner’s brother, Al Joyner, owns 17 metro area McDonald’s. McDonald’s across the country compete to break the record of number of cars served in an hour.

“It’s kind of like a competition between McDonald’s restaurants and we can challenge the record at any time. It’s almost like the McDonald’s Guinness Book of World Records for the number of cars served through the drive-thru in one hour,” said Al Joyner “We really broke it today; last time I checked we were at 297 cars with 20 minutes left and the world record is 288, so we beat them already.”

This particular McDonald’s is frequented by many JSU students, staff, and faculty and is decorated with Jackson State paraphernalia. It features pictures of The Prancing J-Settes and The Sonic Boom of the South, which is Al’s favorite band. Joyner has been a lifelong supporter of JSU’s band program.

“I went to Tuskegee University and I go to HBCU games every weekend across the country. My favorite band is The Sonic Boom. So when I moved to Jackson, I moved here in order to support and to follow The Sonic Boom and I’ve been giving money to them ever since I’ve been here. I buy t-shirts for them every band season, we feed them and I even go to the practices at night,” Al added.

Patrons received a complimentary six piece Chicken McNuggets with barbecue sauce, a packet of apple slices, and a bottle of water during the record breaking event.

There were appearances by City of Jackson Mayor Tony Yarbor, Carolyn Meyers, President of Jackson State University, and of course, The Sonic Boom of the South.

JSU students and staff that attended the event were definitely ‘Lovin’ It’.

“I really came to see Tom Joyner, Sybil, and J. Anthony Brown. I really didn’t know that they were trying to break a record until I was on my way here and somebody told me. I saw it on Instagram and I followed the hype. I’m definitely getting something to eat because this McDonald’s is a part of JSU,” said Chelsey Turner, a senior marketing major from Jackson, Miss.

Laquala Coleman, Associate Dean of Students at JSU, said this event is exactly what JSU needed to participate in.

“I believe that this event is going to continue to help bridge the gap between Jackson State University and the Jackson community. It’s great for partnerships and community collaborations,” said Coleman.

Taylor Bembery Associate Editor The Tom Joyner Morning Show crew helped break the record of most cars served in a drive-thru at the McDonald’s on 2465 U.S. 80 in Jackson, Miss. yesterday.
