Things that use to be private are not private anymore. There is one topic often mentioned when opening an app such as Twitter or Instagram that involves the destruction of relationships.

When asked if social media ruined relationships Devonta Thomas, a sophomore theater art major from Chicago, Ill. said “it puts pressure on the relationship.”

According to The Daily Mail UK, in a study of 1,953 UK adults, 54 percent said that their ex was flirting or had met someone new via social media.

“Well I believe social media does ruin relationships because of the publicity behind it. There’s jealousy so your integrity will be tested,” said Thomas.

People who use Facebook more than once a day are more likely to report conflict in their relationship according to a study conducted by the Journal of Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking.

“People cheat! No app can destroy a relationship,” said Turner.

Lauren Hager, a sophomore entrepreneurship major from Chicago, Ill. believes that social media cannot ruin relationships, people ruin relationships.

“It is the people! If you are loyal, honest, and trustworthy then social media should nor be an issue in your relationship,” said Hager.

Social media can be a dangerous thing to a couple or marriage if not properly used responsibly or in moderation. Alexis Moore, a sophomore political science major from Prentiss, Miss. is another student that believe that it is the people who destroy relationships.

“I believe the people in the relationship who use them in a negative way is what causes the relationship to end and not just social media itself,” said the Prentiss native.

Posting things about what is going in their relationship with their significant other should not be open for the world to see and talk about. The argument saying that whether or not social media destroys relationships is a conflict that will never be resolved and anyone’s answers will be forever be a myth.

Tamarick Johnson contributed

Dwayne A.
