As a part of Alpha Week, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., held a \u201cCollege 2 Corporate\u201d forum in the Student Center Theater on Oct. 5.\u00a0 The forum was started at 7:06 p.m.- to both male and female students.<\/p>\n

Students were asked to wear business professional attire and bring a copy of their resumes.\u00a0 The forum started with Alpha Phi Alpha member Bennie Walker asking all the students to give a brief introduction of themselves including name, major, and an adjective describing themselves.<\/p>\n

Next, the first speaker of the night, attorney and Delta Phi Chapter Advisor Stuart P. Lott was introduced.<\/p>\n

Lott\u2019s presentation focused on the importance of good resumes.<\/p>\n

Lott said, \u201cNext to your degree, the next most important document you\u2019ve got to have when coming out of Jackson State University is your resume.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lott deciphered each component of the resume from the heading section to the work section.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not use job email in headings \u2013 use a professional personal email.\u201d \u201cThink situation, action, and result (SAR) when filling out the work section of your resume,\u201d said Lott.<\/p>\n

Associate Dean of Students, Laquala M. Coleman, was the second speaker of the night.\u00a0 Coleman\u2019s main focus was communicating how to transition from college students to corporate leaders.<\/p>\n

Landon Jordan, a junior criminal justice major from St. Louis, Mo., had remarks on a statement Coleman made in her presentation.<\/p>\n

Jordan said, \u201cOne thing that I learned tonight was to \u2018Never compromise your integrity,\u201d said Coleman.<\/p>\n

Coleman gave a personal example of how if she was asked to write a letter to suspend a student without enough information, \u201cI would not do it.\u00a0 Even if I were to get fired, I could still go to another job and tell them why \u2013 it went against my integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coleman also asked the audience has anyone established their personal brand.\u00a0 Two students raised their hands.<\/p>\n

The final topic Coleman touched base on was \u201cappreciating your journey.\u201d\u00a0 Both Coleman and Lott assured the audience that everyone\u2019s journey would not be the same.\u00a0 What works for one person may not work for another person when it comes to that person\u2019s success.<\/p>\n

At the end of the forum Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity President, Henry Goss, senior mass communications major from Jackson, Miss. was asked how the organization found the two speakers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhenever we do our college to cooperate forum we like to utilize our resources.\u00a0 Brother Lott, who is our chapter advisor, has a wealth of knowledge in resume building.\u00a0 As for Ms. Coleman, we wanted someone to speak from the faculty and we wanted a strong female point of view on the topic,\u201d said Goss.<\/p>\n

From this event students were enriched in corporate world dos and don\u2019ts that will hopefully help them both while at JSU and after graduating from JSU.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
