{"id":625,"date":"2011-09-23T20:40:26","date_gmt":"2011-09-23T20:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.jsums.edu\/jsuflash\/?p=625"},"modified":"2011-09-23T20:40:26","modified_gmt":"2011-09-23T20:40:26","slug":"jackson-states-freeman-production-aims-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.jsums.edu\/theflash\/index.php\/2011\/09\/23\/jackson-states-freeman-production-aims-high\/","title":{"rendered":"Jackson State\u2019s \u2018Freeman\u2019 production aims high"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_626\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-626\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.jsums.edu\/theflash2025\/files\/2011\/09\/P9160157.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-626\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.jsums.edu\/theflash2025\/files\/2011\/09\/P9160157-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-626\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of the cast perform during practice session.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Marquez Williams<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Guest Writer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today, Jackson State University\u2019s Department of Speech Communication and Theatre presents \u201cFreeman,\u201d written by Phillip Dean Hayes and directed by Yohance Myles.<\/p>\n<p>Set in 1970s Michigan, \u201cFreeman\u201d is the story of Freeman Aquila, a spirited young man living in an industrial town with his parents and his wife, Osa Lee.\u00a0 Dissatisfied with his blue-collar job at the local auto plant, Freeman decides to put his money and time into attempts to succeed at other occupations, including a campaign for local political office.\u00a0 These new ambitions begin to interfere with his family responsibilities and lead to major dramatic complications.<\/p>\n<p>The play focuses on the effects of parenting, acceptance of responsibility, and maintaining a self-image that reflects your true character.<\/p>\n<p>Myles said he is pleased with the cast he has assembled for \u201cFreeman,\u201d which includes faculty members, theatre majors, non-majors, and MADDRAMA members.\u00a0 He wants the audience to leave the theatre with a clear understanding of what it means to be involved with their community, whether through voting, education, or economic development.\u00a0 He hopes that people will take away the following lesson: \u201cWhat you do to yourself affects those around you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFreeman\u201d is a very moving play, appropriate for all audiences.<\/p>\n<p>Myles will also soon be appearing in the film \u201cFire with Fire,\u201d starring Bruce Willis and 50 Cent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marquez Williams Guest Writer Today, Jackson State University\u2019s Department of Speech Communication and Theatre presents \u201cFreeman,\u201d written by Phillip Dean Hayes and directed by Yohance Myles.
