As part of the many events held during Jackson State University\u2019s homecoming week, the campus welcomed rising comedians Lavell Crawford, J.J. Williams and Steve Brown on Wednesday, October 5 at 8 p.m. in the Rose. E McCoy Auditorium.<\/p>\n

The Comedy Show is one of the many homecoming events that students, faculty and staff look forward to.<\/p>\n

Returning as a performer from last year\u2019s comedy show was comedian Steve Brown, who hosted last week\u2019s event, whiling warming up the crowd with laughter.<\/p>\n

Brown has made appearances on shows like \u201cRussell Simons\u2019 Def Comedy Jam\u201d, \u201cShowtime at the Apollo\u201d, BET\u2019s \u201cComic View\u201d \u201cTom Joyner Morning Show\u201d, just to name a few. He also appeared in Tyler Perry\u2019s film \u201cMadea\u2019s Family Reunion.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a broadcast communications graduate from Stillman College, Brown said that he enjoys doing shows at HBCUs.<\/p>\n

Brown started the Steve Brown Scholarship fund in 2002, where funding is raised by fellow comedians and local talent in his hometown of Tuscaloosa.<\/p>\n

Brown said that his noted characteristic for joking and playing around with people gave his the position as the emcee for all of the shows at Stillman. He said that it was at one of the many shows that he emceed where an already established comedian took notice of him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe saw me and said \u201cDude, you ought to start doing comedy\u201d and he started taking me on the road with him,\u201d said Brown.
\nComedian Jeremiah \u201cJ.J.\u201d Williams Jr., has a special fondness for Jackson, Miss.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really enjoy coming to Jackson State\u201d, said Williams, a Jim Hill High School and Alcorn State University graduate. He earned his rank in the entertainment business when he won the Bay Area Comedy Competition in Oakland, Calif.,\u00a0 in 2000.<\/p>\n

Williams recalls his first indication of success in the business during a show in Atlanta, Ga.<\/p>\n

\u201cI moved to Atlanta, went to the comedy club, tried it out and got a standing ovation on my first night and stayed with it\u201d, said Williams.<\/p>\n

Since then, the Jackson, Miss., native has made serval television appearances on shows like \u201cShowtime at the Apollo\u201d,\u00a0 BET\u2019s \u201cComic View\u201d, and Urban Works Entertainment\u2019s \u201cCedric The Entertainer Presents: The Platinum Comedy Series — Starting Line-Up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Williams also played in the 2004 film \u201cJohnson Family Vacation\u201d as Cousin Bodie.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a boyhood dream of mine growing up watching the old veterans like Richard Prior, Eddy Murphy and Redd Foxx. That\u2019s what really light the build in my head to want to go and pursue this\u201d, said Williams.<\/p>\n

Williams, whose ties to the Jackson community provided a comedian-audience relation in his references to faculty and staff at his former high school.<\/p>\n

Headliner Lavell Crawford\u2019s performance at the comedy show was his first at Jackson State.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Mississippi is a good state.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot of love and a lot of pain here.\u00a0 I like to go to cities where the folk may need to laugh when they are going through something serious,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Crawford has made appearances in television shows such as \u201cThe Jamie Foxx Show\u201d, \u201cComic View\u201d, and NBC\u2019s reality series \u201cLast Comic Standing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The crowd roared with laughter, as Crawford performed, giving the crowd some of his signature \u201cvoices\u201d and bulging eyes.
\nStudents said they enjoyed the comic relief.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was really funny and the DJ was really good\u201d, said Elizabeth Donnelly, a freshman elementary education major from Memphis, Tenn.<\/p>\n

Desiree Conton, a freshman biology major from Peoria, Ill., said the show was \u201chilarious and it gave me something to do\u201d, said Conton.<\/p>\n
