The O.C. McDavid Student Newspaper Awards, sponsored by the MPA, were held and The Blue & White Flash, JSU\u2019s official campus newspaper, won 17 awards including 7 first place awards.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Jackson State University School of Journalism and Media Studies (SJMS) partnered with the Mississippi Press Association to discuss the new ways media is delivered and received during an annual conference held on March 30.<\/p>\n

The event was filled with media professionals\u2019 imparting knowledge to journalism students from junior colleges and universities across the state of Mississippi.<\/p>\n

On the topic: \u201cMultimedia: How it is Delivered; How it is Received\u201d, most of the media professionals agreed on one fact: the way the news is delivered and received is changing from traditional media channels to digital media channels.<\/p>\n

SJMS Dean Elayne H. Anthony, said, \u201cThe School of Journalism and Media Studies conference was a resounding success. Our students learned cutting edge information from current media professionals on what is going on in the media industry today. They also learned however, that some things in the industry will never change, and that\u2019s having a foundation in writing, ethics and integrity. As a faculty, we were empowered to continue the good work of preparing our students for careers in media.\u201d<\/p>\n

Presenters from the Mississippi Today, an online non-profit magazine, offered many examples of the impact of the digital information age. Mississippi Today extensively uses social media as a tool to spread their news stories nationally.<\/p>\n

Dennis Moore, one of the editors for Mississippi Today, explained how social media played a part in making their \u201cLegislature: All Our Contracts are Secret\u201d article popular among readers outside of Mississippi.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe got a lot of national attention for this story,\u201d Moore said. \u201cSerena Henderson is our social media coordinator and she was very quick to monitor Twitter and Facebook reactions to this. We got readers all over the country who were interested in this, who had no clue who Mississippi Today was.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the \u201cNew Media Skills for Public Relations, Advertising, Integrated Marketing Communication\u201d panel, the media professionals described how social media and public relations coincide with each other in the digital media age.<\/p>\n

Nsenga K. Burton, the editor-in-chief for Grady Newsource, described how the new generation of media professionals are at an advantage when it comes to using digital media.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things that is important is that you do have skills to contribute because you are digital natives. That is what we refer to you as in our field,\u201d Burton said. \u201cThat\u2019s awesome because you have grown up in these digital media age and you know how to use different social media platforms. However, you must know how to use them in a professional setting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael Wallace, an award-winning newspaper journalist who reports on sports, politics, crime and education, served as the luncheon speaker.<\/p>\n

Wallace, who now serves as senior editor and analyst for Grind City Media, explained how he uses digital media in his profession, during the luncheon discussion: \u201cSurvive and Thrive in Today\u2019s Digital Media Age.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wallace explained that when he first started working in journalism, it was during the time when newspapers were still the common way of getting news. Now, in 2017, he has become adapted to the digital media age. Wallace had on display an iPhone attached to a tripod and a microphone; this is how he records his sports segments that are uploaded online.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis entire get-up right here is probably $1,500,\u201d Wallace said. \u201cThis use to be the job of four people. In today\u2019s digital media economy, one guy or one woman has to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a concurrent luncheon session, the O.C. McDavid Student Newspaper Awards, sponsored by the MPA, were held and The Blue & White Flash, JSU\u2019s official campus newspaper, won 17 awards including 7 first place awards.<\/p>\n

William H. Kelly, III, Flash editor-in-chief said, \u201cIt is always a great honor and privilege to experience these achievements with my staff.\u00a0 Our hard work and diligence as journalists, photographers and designers show when we are awarded by other media professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dean Anthony was also ecstatic over the news of the Flash\u2019s awards.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are very proud of the Mississippi Press Association awards received by our students with The Blue & White Flash. It was very gratifying to hear of the 17 awards, which included 7 first place awards, because this puts the Flash in a whole new category. This shows that our students are producing an accurate and professional product that is being recognized and applauded,\u201d said Anthony.<\/p>\n

Afternoon panel discussions included: \u201cIt\u2019s More Than a Game\u201d which delved into the area of sports media with local sports journalists Ashley ShahAhmadi with WAPT, T.J. Werre with WJTV, Jeff Baker with Fox40 Sports and Jon Weiner of 105.9.<\/p>\n

The last discussion of the event: \u201cThe Write Thing: Applying Old School Skills to New School Journalism\u201d which included input from Alice Tisdale of the Jackson Advocate, Todd Stauffer of the Jackson Free Press, Jackie Hampton of The Mississippi Link and Dustin Barns of The Clarion-Ledger.<\/p>\n

The conference ended with an awards banquet and heartfelt speech from banquet speaker Alysia Burton Steele. Steele, a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist, is author of the book \u201cDelta Jewels: In Search of My Grandmother\u2019s Wisdom.\u201d The book is a collection of formal portraits and oral histories from church mothers, including civil rights activist Myrlie Evers – widow of NAACP leader Medgar Evers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I moved to Mississippi and I accepted a position at the University of Mississippi, I knew the painful past of this state and I wasn\u2019t quite ready for it. I wasn\u2019t ready for some of the challenges I was facing at the University of Mississippi and I wanted to pick up the phone and call my grandmother and I couldn\u2019t. There\u2019s nothing like that regret when you want to talk to someone and they are no longer on this earth,\u201d said Steele.<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cI decided that I would know more about my grandmother by interviewing other people\u2019s grandmothers. So from this personal project came a book. The New York Times heard about it and wrote about and book deals came. I wanted to tell the journalism students in particular, follow what you are passionate about and what you care about because you never know where that road can take you and do it with a good heart and good intentions.\u201d<\/p>\n
