{"id":9821,"date":"2019-04-05T17:28:30","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T17:28:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.jsums.edu\/jsuflash\/?p=9821"},"modified":"2019-04-05T17:28:30","modified_gmt":"2019-04-05T17:28:30","slug":"hbcu-rivals-unified-as-one-during-spring-concert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.jsums.edu\/theflash\/index.php\/2019\/04\/05\/hbcu-rivals-unified-as-one-during-spring-concert\/","title":{"rendered":"HBCU rivals unified as one during spring concert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Leonard Moore<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MC301 Contributor<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9822\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9822\" style=\"width: 523px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.jsums.edu\/theflash2025\/files\/2019\/04\/rivalsunified.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9822\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.jsums.edu\/theflash2025\/files\/2019\/04\/rivalsunified.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"523\" height=\"392\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9822\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On March 29, 2019, Jackson State University\u2019s Mass Choir hosted its 2nd Annual Spring Concert, \u201cBlast From Thee Past\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>At this concert, three historic black college rivals met once again.\u00a0\u00a0This was no ordinary meeting.\u00a0\u00a0The schools came together, not as rivals, but as one in worship.\u00a0Jackson State, Alcorn State University, and Southern University\u2019s gospel choirs came with one goal in mind, to lift up the name of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Held at the Jackson Revival Center Church, the worship experience kicked off with song selections from Jackson State\u2019s Praise Team, and then on to scripture reading and a unified prayer.<\/p>\n<p>Once unified, Juan Knight, JSU Mass Choir founder and staff advisor introduced Minister Jason Gibson, Master of Ceremony.\u00a0\u00a0Filled with love and laughter, Gibson kept the order of worship going.<\/p>\n<p>Starting with JSU Mass, Alcorn State University Gospel Choir, and lastly Southern University Gospel Choir, the HBCU choirs gave God an unordinary worship.\u00a0\u00a0The worship was spiritual, uplifting, and yet unifying.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, being held at the Jackson Revival Center Church has great significance.\u00a0\u00a0According to Knight, \u201cNot only is Jackson Revival Center my church home, but before Jackson Revival Center integrated, the entire Jackson State Gospel choir attended service there to sing in the 1970\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While attending, the choir joined Jackson Revival Center Church as members,\u201d Knight said.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cJackson State Gospel Choir then became members of Jackson Revival Center Church Choir,\u201d Knight said. \u201cJackson Revival Center has a lot of history with JSU Mass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Knight added, \u201cBeing that this year\u2019s theme is Blast From Thee Past, I feel that God totally orchestrated us having the concert at a church that we share such great history with,\u201d said Knight.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIt all correlates together.\u00a0\u00a0It just worked out that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Stallworth, choir director for Alcorn State University Gospel Choir said, \u201cI think this event is very wonderful.\u00a0\u00a0It is good having everyone come together to praise God and celebrate Jesus for who he is.\u00a0It is really nice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stallworth added, \u201cWith JSU and Alcorn being such rivals as it relates to football, bringing the choirs together as one to praise God is awesome, being able to put rivalry aside, and to be Christlike I just love it.\u00a0\u00a0Its good to be able to come together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roland Stewart, assistant director and assistant advisor for the Southern University Gospel Choir was pleased that the event unifies the universities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlast From Thee Past is dynamic. The praise and worship is really pure. Its really good to see young folks come together and be able to be on the same level, especially on a Friday night,\u201d said Stewart.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cWe are very excited to be able to come here with Alcorn.\u00a0\u00a0We get a chance to see them outside of the football arena.\u00a0\u00a0I encourage other rival university\u2019s out there to jump on board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event did not only bring out the choirs, it drew the presence of a queen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight\u2019s event is amazing,\u201d said Gabrielle Baker, 79<sup>th<\/sup>Miss Jackson State University.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIt amazing to see Southern, Jackson State, and Alcorn come together in the name of Jesus Christ.\u00a0\u00a0In sports we are always competing.\u00a0\u00a0We don\u2019t just compete, but we are rivals.\u00a0\u00a0Not this time though.\u00a0\u00a0It is just so great to see all come together as one for such a great event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Baker believes the event is a ministry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot everyone serve the same God or have the same religion, but tonight we all came together as one.\u00a0\u00a0Three different schools serving one God, under one roof is powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cJSU Mass is anointed.\u00a0\u00a0God has truly blessed the vision of Juan Knight, and I can not wait to see what years to come has to offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leonard Moore MC301 Contributor On March 29, 2019, Jackson State University\u2019s Mass Choir hosted its 2nd Annual Spring Concert, \u201cBlast From Thee Past\u201d.
