Alisa Ross’ game high of 20 points and 6 rebounds wasn’t enough for the Jackson State University Lady Tigers fell short to Southern University 70-55 on Feb. 10 at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center.
Jackson State dug a 17-3 hole at the beginning of the game. At the 4:45 mark in the first half, the Southern University Lady Jaguars led by as much as 24 points. The Lady Tigers did not take the led the entire game.
Jackson State shooting percentage decreased from the past three games that granted the Lady Tigers victories, shooting only 25.5% from the field (14-55) and 27.3% from the three point line (3-11).
The Lady Jaguars outscored JSU 28-22 from the paint, 24-11 off of turnovers and 6-2 off of fast break points. However, Jackson State bench outscored Southern 26-18.
“We shot 25.5% from the floor but it all starts with our shot selection. We have to take higher percentage shots and focus on putting the ball in the basket,” said Ross.
Jasmine Jefferson led Southern with a double-double scoring 13 points and collecting 12 rebounds. Kendra Coleman received 13 points and Adrian Sanders collected 12 points and 6 rebounds.
With the loss, The Lady Tigers fall to an 8-12 overall and 7-4 Southwestern Athletic Conference record.
In men’s action, JSU Tigers men’s team also fell to Southern 63-68, despite the 20 point efforts of Julysses Nobles.
With the loss, Jackson State falls to an 8-15 overall and 4-7 in Southwestern Athletic Conference record.
The Jaguars jumped out of the gate out-scoring JSU 8-14 at the 11:00 mark in the first half. However, JSU did not drop their head and cut the led 15-16 from Brandon West and Taylor Derell grabbing rebounds and put-backs.
In the second half, Southern went on a 6-0 run (43-57) at the 7:32 mark. Nobles went on a scoring spree, cutting into the Jaguars lead 63-66.
Despite Jackson State’s efforts, the Tigers could not cut into Southern’s lead enough to grant them a win even though JSU outscored Southern 24-20 points in the paint and 22-16 off of turnovers. Brandon West scored collected a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds and Derell Taylor received 14 points.
For Southern, Calvin Godfrey led his team with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Yondarius Johnson and Tre Lynch both scored 15 points.
Jackson State will resume action Saturday Feb. 15 at Prairie View A & M University.
