Miskelly speaks at business lecture series

Jackson State University’s Department of Entrepreneurship affirmed its motto, “Where Every Path Leads to Opportunity,” on Feb. 14, at the College of Business Entrepreneurship Lecture Series.

The lecture series gives business students the opportunity to interact with business entrepreneurs, top researchers, executives and managers from businesses and industries from the Jackson metropolitan area and around the nation.

Oscar Miskelly, CEO of Miskelly Furniture in Jackson, Miss., was the guest speaker.

Miskelly, a 1976 graduate of Mississippi State University’s School of Business is active in the community through several civic and professional organizations.

“I feel deeply and strongly about giving back and encouraging young students like the students here at Jackson State University,” said Miskelly.  “Any and every opportunity that I am graced with, in order to share my story and encourage hopeful business owners, I am willing to take.”

Miskelly Furniture was started in 1978 and is currently listed by Furniture Today as one of the Top 100 furniture stores in America.

Miskelly Furniture provides a large selection of home furnishings to the metro Jackson area including Pearl, Brandon, Flowood and also outlying areas in Meridian, Ridgeland, Madison, Canton, Tupelo, Clinton, Vicksburg, Florence, Brookhaven, Hattiesburg, and Gulfport.

Chip Cooper, a junior business major from Vicksburg, Miss. said, “The fact that Oscar Miskelly came to speak to the Department of Business was inspiring. I hope to one day own my own business and make a steady career out of my business degree.”

Mary White Chair and Associate Professor said: “I think that it is great that the business students here have these great opportunities to enhance their knowledge of their major concentration.”
