Jackson State University SGA President Brian Wilks says “For the People,” not just a slogan, but a way of life! The 2012-2013 Student Government Association has adopted this catchy phrase and has infused it into everyday life at Jackson State.
Wilks’ platform of PROJECT Increase has targeted social awareness, involvement, and morale within the student population.
Here is summary of fall 2012 activities and accomplishments:
• The SGA’s voter registration efforts in collaboration with the NAACP was a huge success. The campaign increased voter turnout, political awareness and registered voters.
• The Nov. 6 election party held in the NSC was filled with the Jackson State student body. The election party sponsored by the SGA, NAACP, and dining services allowed Jacksonians to congregate and celebrate President Obama’s re-election.
• Student involvement has drastically increased this year with record attendance at Student Body meetings.
• The student body has worked diligently with the SGA supporting its initiatives with the newly formed SGA Street Team. The street team has created a buzz about SGA events and formed an alliance between the SGA and student body.
• President Wilks’ final goal was to increase student morale. The SGA has done exactly that by offering opportunities for students to travel to games to support their peers. The SGA has also increased the student morale by increasing hotspots and student supported events.
• The SGA is also increasing its efforts to highlight and decrease student issues this year. The SGA has created a box where students can input their issues and the SGA members follow-up and contact the student to investigates the issue. The box is located on the 2nd floor in the SGA suite.
The SGA accomplished many of its goals for a successful first semester and looks forward to next semester.
