Tyra Suggs, a junior criminal justice pre-law major from East St.Lous, Ill. and Jackson State Universtiy student will reign as the 2011 Miss Capital City Classic.
Alyshia Alexander, a senior from Alcorn was first runner-up and Amber Jones, a sophomore from ASU was second runner-up.
The pageant was held on Nov. 11, 2011 at the historic Alamo Theater in downtown Jackson, and included two students from Alcorn State University and four students from JSU.
“The pageant was a good experience. I had a lot of tough competition,” said Suggs. “The girls really worked hard for the pageant. I was really excited about the outcome. I am honored to be picked to present JSU and Alcorn as well.”
Participants in the pageant went through an application process, interview with the judges and a swimsuit, talent, and formal question/answer segments during the competition.
Lori Stewart, who has been helping direct the pageant for two years now, said, “The purpose of the pageant is to show the beauty, talents, and grace each campus has to offer.”
The pageant was hosted by Miss JSU and Miss ASU and their royal courts. Upon winning, Miss Capital City Classic represents JSU and Alcorn as well as attend most, if not all, Capital City Classic week events.
The formal question for this year’s pageant was: “If you were promoting a high school graduate to come to an HBCU what would you tell them?”
“If I were to encourage a student to come to an HBCU it would be because there is plenty of diversity, an HBCU is well rounded, and it is also a home away from home.”
Suggs, an SGA justice, also was named “The Voice of JSU,” and is MADDRAMA Vice President.
