It is “more than a game” for Jackson State Tigers loss

After last year’s loss in the SWAC championship, the Jackson State University football program made a complete turnaround entering the 2013 season.
This season’s motto for the team is “This is More than a Game.”
Jackson State played its first game of the season Aug. 29th against the Tulane Green Wave. The Tigers put up a tough fight but it still was not enough to overcome the Green Wave.  Red Shirt freshman quarterback, LaMontiez Ivy, threw an interception during the first drive of the game, resulting in five more turnovers and Ivy’s injury during the third quarter of the game. The Tigers opened the season with a 34-7 loss to Tulane.
With key losses to graduation and the NFL, including: Stephen Capler OL, Zion Pyatt, Jonathan Smith OL, Joseph LeBeau DL, Jonathan Billups DL, and ex star wide out Rico Richardson, JSU is in a building phase for the season.
However JSU does return eight starters on offense and seven on defense, one of those being star defensive back, Qua Cox. Senior quarterback, Clayton Moore, is coming off of injury and will be ready to play Saturday, Sept. 7th against Alabama State University.
Moore has developed into the offensive leader and guided JSU to five back-to-back wins last season. He accounted for 1,863 passing yards and 11 touchdowns, and rushed for an additional 633 yards, scoring 11 touchdowns on the ground.
Wideout Zachary Pendleton is expected to be Moore’s main target for the season, accounting for 33 receptions for 457 yards last season. Receiver’s Tobias Singleton and DeSuan McKenzie each recorded for 15 catches last season and will help Pendleton fill a void with the departure of SWAC Offensive Player of the Year, Rico Richardson.
The remainder of the schedule is full of tough conference teams like Alabama State, Tennessee State and the reigning SWAC Champions Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Some of the teams the Tigers are projected to beat are Texas Southern, Southern, Grambling State, and Prairie View.
Coach Rick Comegy believes that his Tigers have some unfinished business with the SWAC Championship and the guys are working hard every day to prepare themselves to finish the season off with winning record and most importantly, “The SWAC Title.”
