Senior guard Julysses Nobles scored a game high 23-points and the Jackson State men’s basketball team pulled to within five points with 7:11 remaining in the game, but the Cowboys held on down the stretch to beat the Tigers 73-65 Monday night at the Arena-Auditorium. The game was Wyoming’s final game of the Global Sports Shootout and JSU’s third of the tournament. JSU is 1-2 in the Global Sports Shootout this season.
Nobles went 8-22 from the field and 5-7 from the free throw line in 39 minutes of play. He also dished out three assists and connected on two of his six three-point shot attempts. Treshawn Bolden was the only other Tiger to score in double figures. He scored 14 points on 6-12 shooting to go along with three rebounds.
Four Cowboys scored in double figures with Riley Grabau leading the way with 16 points. Larry Nance, Jr. followed with 15 points and seven rebounds.
JSU (1-4) trailed 35-24 at halftime. However, for the first time this season, JSU outscored its opponent in the second half. JSU scored 41 points and Wyoming had 38. A key stat in the game was the free throw difference between the two teams. The Tigers attempted 15 free throw attempts, making 11 and the Cowboys went 31-44 from the line.
Wyoming (3-1) led by as much as 16 points midway through the second half. However, JSU fought back to cut the lead to 61-56 with six minutes left in the game.
JSU held the advantage in points in the paint (30-26), points off turnovers (19-10), second chance points (16-2) and bench scoring (20-16). The Tigers shot 41.7% from the field and 73.3% from the line. Wyoming connected on 52.8% of its field goal attempts and made 70.5% of its free throw attempts.
Jackson State returns to action Friday, Nov. 22 when the Tigers travel to Martin, Tenn. to take on UT Martin in JSU’s final game of the Global Sport Shootout. Tip-off is set for 7 pm.
