Imagine this: “It’s the day before Valentine’s Day and the crush that you have been so eagerly anticipating to speak to walks up to you and asks the unexpected question, “Will you be my Valentine.” With little money and even less time to go out and get a present, you are suddenly bombarded with the stress that many suffer when that fat little guy with arrow appears once a year. But wait! There is hope; it is the Student Government Association’s Sweet Heart Week!
The SGA is selling affordable sweets for your sweetheart from Feb. 10-15. The gift baskets, which range in price from $8- $12 will include a teddy bear and a box of chocolates of varying sizes depending on the cost. Student can also purchase roses and schedule an Outspoken member to spit a verse to the person of your choice on the delivery for an additional fee.
The only rule for the packages is that no one person can order for two different people. Rashad Sayles, an industrial engineering major from Jackson, Miss. and chair of the Sweet Heart Committee explained the rule.
“The reason behind the rule comes from my personal years of “Pimpin”. Truly we don’t want to get caught up in any domestic disagreements. I know firsthand that these situations can get ugly, fast,” said Sayles.
The Sweet Heart Week hopes to show JSU students that the SGA has an understanding of the numerous financial and time management hardships that come with Valentine’s Day shopping. The price for the most expensive package is only $12 which is much more reasonable than the prices of bears and candy at many stores.
Another one of the goals of the week, according to the SGA, was to give the students around campus an opportunity to show their significant other great appreciation.
Craig Gorden, an accounting major from Stone Mountain, Ga. purchased the package and stated, “I have never had a delivery for a woman and I never even fathomed having the delivery come with a song of my choice, wrap all of these things that I know women love for only $14, the deal is unbeatable. If this doesn’t work then I don’t know what else will and I honestly don’t care to know.”
The prices are low, but the SGA guarantees the quality of the gifts, even taking a risk by selling the packages for less than they bought them for.
Shontrice Garrett, a mathematics education major and SGA representative from East St. Louis, Ill simply states, “The price doesn’t matter; it’s the thought that counts”.
The SGA has decided to try to keep this week going for years to come. For those who haven’t ordered for this year’s Sweet Heart week, the deadline to order is Thursday, Feb. 13th, the day before Valentine’s Day, but the SGA will be selling individual teddy bears, roses, and candy all week long.
