Jackson State University, my dear ole college home, has currently been on a presidential search with 33 members of the Campus Search Advisory Committee leading the way.
The members of this committee include, Interim President Rod Paige, who is a former student and football coach, Provost Dr. Evelyn Leggette and current student government association president, Kendall Bunch, just to name a few.
Recently, I have had concerns with the direction the university is currently heading in, not because of it’s current leadership, but because of the decisions made prior to our current interim president.
Our previous university president made multiple decisions that led my dear ole college home into a financial downward spiral, putting the education of thousands of students in jeopardy.
What this university needs is a full-time leader, and being a leader means defining and exhibiting moral and ethical courage and setting an example for everyone in the company or community.
Students at Jackson State University are looking for someone who has leadership skills, who is completely honest, who can handle student affairs and who has the business skills to manage this Historically Black University.
Our former president, that whom cannot be named, fell short of those qualities and put us in the current predicament we are in,
As students that has expressed genuine interest in this institute of higher learning, we deserve more than this.
As a current student and future alumnae, I know what my HBCU needs.
Jackson State University needs to be financially supported because this university needs to continue to challenge minds and change lives.
Since my arrival at the university in 2015, I was exposed to a university that emphasizes tradition and family.
I did not want to attend Jackson State when I was in high school, but after spending two years at a predominately white institute that I thought did not give enough time to me and my endeavors, I left.
There is something powerful about attending an institution that was built for you. Most colleges were built for white students, or at least, with only white students in mind.
I found a home at JSU and this community of students are now my family, and my family deserves a true leader who cares about us more than they care about a check and a 401k.
The school song reads, “Jackson fair, Jackson dear, Thee I love my dear ole college home. Thee I love, wherever I may roam. Hail to thee, Hail to the college of my heart.”
Jackson State is truly the college of my heart and we need to work with the president’s search committee to find a president committed to the excellence and growth of this university.
Some of you are gearing up to graduate from this university and become the next great leaders and entrepreneurs of this great nation, but we need to remember that wherever we may roam, we still have an obligation to continue to provide the same excellence and education we received at the nation’s fourth largest HBCU.
Student’s please be active and outspoken in our search for a great leader, because we are the ones effected by his or her outcome.
