If you are interested in a television show that combines the harsh realities of racism, time travel, alternative universes, and the chilling unknown elements of the supernatural world, then HBO’s new television series “Lovecraft Country” is the show for you. Warning! Spoilers are included!
“Lovecraft Country” is set in the 1950s during the Jim Crow Era which was an era focused on legalizing racial segregation.
While the plot of the show follows the main protagonist, Atticus Freeman or Tic, on his journey in search of his father, there are many twists and turns.
The story comes from the 2016 novel “Lovecraft Country” written by Matt Ruff, which follows Korean War veteran Atticus Freeman as he encounters dark forces and his connections to them, according to showbizcheatsheet.com. Ruff’s story was inspired by a fictional world created by horror writer H.P. Lovecraft.
The pilot episode, which aired on Aug.16, 2020, introduces the series with an action-packed opening scene. Tic is shown running through a battlefield while fighting in a war. As he is fighting, an alien woman appears from the sky in a spaceship. Then as a gigantic creature tries to kill them both, well-known baseball player, Jackie Robinson, appears and attacks the creature with his baseball bat.
Suddenly, the scene jumps to Tic dreaming at the back of a bus. It becomes apparent that Tic fell asleep reading one of his favorite science fiction adventure novels. Soon after he awakens, the bus breaks down. This forces him and one other black passenger to walk to their next destination while the white passengers continue on to a second bus.
During this walk, viewers learn that Tic is returning to his hometown of Chicago in search of his lost father, Montrose.
Over the course of 10 one-hour episodes, viewers followed the complicated yet intriguing plot of “Lovecraft Country”. Tic is informed that to save everyone, he will have to sacrifice his life.
In the season finale, entitled “Full Circle”, it is explained that her master raped Tic’s great-great-great-great grandmother Hanna, and as a result, she became pregnant.
After a house fire killed everyone but Hanna, she feared that the magical order would come after her because her child was the next of kin to her master.
To help protect herself and her unborn child, she cast a spell that hid her bloodline from all who knew magic. Once Tic learned this, Hanna granted him the gift of magic.
The majority of the season finale followed Tic, Montrose, his aunt, his ex-lover Ji-ah, and his current lover Leti, as they formulated a grand scheme to save the power of magic from the greedy descendants of his great-great-great-great grandmother’s master.
No matter the plan, Tic knew that he would have to die.
Even though it was too late to save Tic, Ji-ah used her dark energy to connect the bodies of Tic and one of the descendants while Leti chanted a spell.
Viewers then learn that Leti cast a spell that striped all white people of magic and that only blacks were now afforded the privilege.
The show did a great job of keeping viewers confused while also keeping them entertained. While the season finale helped to piece everything together, it left viewers guessing for a possible season two plot.
Overall, “Lovecraft Country” is a show that has something for everyone. This series includes magic, monsters, and ghosts for the supernatural lovers, political material for people into history, and time travel as well as alternate universes for science fiction enthusiasts.
As for now, the series has not been renewed for season two.
