The Jackson State University Tigers prevailed over the Tigers Texas Southern University in a battle of the big cats at the Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Texas Southern looked to add a third win to their record as they entered the game.
This game was interesting, to say the least. The first quarter of this game showed spectators many things about both teams.
In the first quarter, Jackson State would play great defense for 2 plays straight, which would result in a 3rd down. This would occur often. As a result, Texas Southern would covert and move closer to scoring territory.
This 3rd down defense slump would not phase the Jackson State Tigers as Jacobian Morgan scored not too long after, which would put the score at 7-0.
Penalties would strike the Texas Southern Tigers and give Jackson State the ball back. The second quarter would arrive and Jackson State would have the ball.
This would prompt them to move down the field. Three minutes into 2nd quarter, JSU’s Seven McGee scored a touchdown making the score 14-0.
The 2nd quarter would present a couple of 3-and-outs for Jackson State. This would guide Texas Southern to score, making the score 7-14.
Jackson State did not let that phase them. The 2nd quarter would shine light on both the Texas Southern and Jackson State defense. In the final 30 seconds, Jackson State would score off a Jacobian Morgan run that would make the score 21-7.
This 14-point lead would not last long as the third quarter was riddled with penalties and a gross amount of 3-and-outs. This would be the best description of the 3rd and 4th quarter.
The only score of the 3rd quarter would be from Texas Southern and this would shave the lead down to a score of 21-13.
The 4th quarter was one to remember as the ending of this game was down to the wire.
Close to the end of the game, a pass interference penalty was called on Texas Southern. This play would be reviewed and called back. This would move them closer to the goal line. They marched down the field in record time it seems.
As they got closer to the goal line, Jackson State could not find an answer to the Texas Southern offense. Texas Southern would score on this drive making it 21-19 JSU.
As the final seconds of the game appeared, Texas Southern was looking to score a 2-point conversion to tie the game 21-21. That was not the case as Jackson State came up big with an interception that would seal the game in their favor.
According to the Jackson State Press Conference, T.C. Taylor, Jackson State head coach stated, “They fought really hard in the first half. The defense played really well. The 2nd half its been the same thing when we play at home. We got to be better than that.”
Students from Jackson State who watched the game were excited and elated as the Tigers won.
Joesph Thomas III, a political science major from Miami Florida thoroughly enjoyed this game. Thomas states, “The game was incredible and also almost not so good due to the fact of the refs calling a penalty at the end of the game which almost cost us the win for Jackson State however the defense was able to stop the 2-point conversion from happening to give us the leading score. The fans were amazingly energetic as usual and kept the team spirit alive.”
The game was fun; being a boomsmen it’s regular going to a football game, so much so that I find my boredom growing the longer it goes on. But this game was engaging and energy-filled, from the team taking off in the first quarter to the band dominating in the fifth. Fans brought the energy per usual; games like this build my pride as a student of JSU.
The Tigers face off against the Alcorn Braves on Nov. 14 which is a well anticipated game for all to see.
